The Charlotte Bobcats introduced their new head coach to the media on Friday afternoon. As expected it was former Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Sam Vincent. Vincent replaces former coach Bernie Bickerstaff who was reassigned elsewhere in the organization. Vincent, does not have an extensive coaching resume, he was only an assistant with the Mavericks for this past season. However, Vincent also was coach of the Nigerian National team , and took his NBDL team to the League Championship game when he was coaching the Fort Worth franchise.

Vincent played in the back in the 1980’s originally drafted by the Boston Celtics, and assuming a backup point guard role. He eventually ended up with the Chicago Bulls where he struck a close friendship with current Charlotte part owner Michael Jordan.

Vincent beat out other candidates who interviewed for the job who had far greater NBA coaching experience. Those candidates included Mike Fratello, Paul Silas, and Stan Van Gundy. Jordan had stated earlier in the week that ideally he would like to have a coach in place by June 5.
