The Indianapolis Star reported on Wednesday that Indiana Pacers President Larry Bird wants to try to get his team a pick in Thursday night’s NBA draft and lays the odds at even that they will be able to pull off some sort of a deal. The Pacers sacrificed the number 11 slot to the Atlanta Hawks in compensation for Al Harrington. Bird told the paper that he has explored possibilities with many teams, including Minnesota, who happens to have Bird’s old Celtic running mate Kevin McHale as their General Manager. Bird said that were lots of teams with interest in some of Indiana’s young players, and would not rule out trading big man Jermaine O’Neal if the package was right. O’Neal can opt out of the remaining two years of his contract after the upcoming NBA season, and has stated that he does not want to be part of a rebuilding process. O’Neal is also known to have had hard feelings towards Bird and the Pacers after former coach Isiah Thomas was fired shortly after O’Neal inked his pact. Thomas is now coach and G.M. of the New York Knicks.?
