NBA Commissioner David Stern faced the media on Tuesday, to address the the reports that have surfaced since last Friday about former NBA referee Tim Donaghy. Donaghy has been the subject of a Federal Investigation that either he or his “Associates” bet on NBA games, or that Donaghy may have been involved either in passing on inside information to bookmakers, or possibly trying to “fix” NBA games. Tuesday was the first time that Stern talked publicly about the incident, his office released a written statement last Friday. Stern told the media that the case was the “worst situation I’ve ever experienced either as fan of the NBA, a lawyer for the NBA or commissioner of the NBA.”

Stern stressed that this was an isolated incident and there are no other NBA officials under suspicion. He said that the league first learned about the case on June 20, and that Donaghy had resigned his post on July 9. Stern said that the investigation right now to his knowledge was focusing on betting or passing on inside information. He said he knew of no charges presently of “fixing”games. The Commissioner went on to say that he hopes to maintain the fans confidence, and to restore faith in the league to those who have been shaken by the incident.
