A very sad chapter, in what at one time looked to be a very promising story took place on Wednesday as former NBA player Ron Mercer turned himself over to Tennesee?law enforcement officials on Wednesday. He was?being charged?with misdemeanor assault tied to?an incident ?at a Nashville strip club back in April. Mercer who is a Nashville native now lives in the Nashville area. His companion Robert Johnson was charged with felonious assault after allegedly stabbing a bouncer during the incident. Both men are free on bond and scheduled for arraignment on August 13. Mercer was a freshman on the University of Kentucky basketball team in 1996 that won the NCAA Championship. He was the sixth pick overall selected by the Boston Celtics in the 1997 NBA Draft. Mercer was traded a few years later, and injuries took away his effectiveness as a shooting guard. He was waived by the New Jersey Nets after missing 60 games due to injury in 2005.
