Just because Jermaine O’Neal said he would “welcome a trade to the Lakers” does not necessarily mean he wants to be traded to Los Angeles. So came the “Spin Control” from the Indiana Pacers power forward after his statements to a reporter that he made at a Los Angeles charity basketball game caused the Pacers Larry Bird to come out with an official team statement. O’Neal Monday night said that he was very happy with Indiana and had no intentions of seeking a trade. However, because the team was now in a rebuilding mode, and if they wanted to trade him to the Lakers, well then he would welcome the trade. Bird after being made aware of O’Neal’s remarks said that if the Pacers were to explore trading their All-Star they would have to receive equal value. Earlier O’Neal’s agent Arn Tellem released a statement saying that his client had not asked the Pacers to trade him to Los Angeles, and that any statement to the contrary was inaccurate.
