Cavaliers And Kings Could Be Talking Bibby For Gooden
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
NBA sources say that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Sacramento Kings are talking about swapping Kings point guard Mike Bibby for Cleveland power forward Drew Gooden. The Cavaliers who have not had an elite point guard on their roster since they traded Andre Miller to the L.A. Clippers, definitely need a quarterback. And Bibby at 29 years old coming off a season in which he averaged 17. 1 points and 4.7 assists in a season that the Kings did not even make the playoffs makes him a credible candidate to fill the bill. Gooden, although he will never be the player he replaced, Carlos Boozer, is a very good player. In fact when he is focused which is about 75 % of the time he is a great player. The problem is that other 25 %. But without him do the Cavaliers have enough at the four with an aging Donyell Marshall, and although Anderson Vareajo is expected to re-sign with the team next year, can he be an elite power forward? He has the desire, and he is instant adrenaline off the bench, but sixth or seventh men do not always make that next step up successfully.
It is good to see that Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry, is exploring ways of improving the team. With the acquisitions that Boston made, with Gilbert Arenas, and Caron Butler most likely in playing shape by the start of the season for Washington, Cleveland can not stand pat. If they do that it will automatically mean they will on a lower rung of the ladder than they were at the end of last season. The question the team has to figure out, is can the addition of Bibby and the promotion to starter of Vareajo can compensate for the loss of Gooden.
