Former University of Maryland, and former NBA forward Lonny Baxter was sentenced to sixty days behind bars for illegal shipment of guns. Baxter who was arrested and jailed in 2006 for shooting off a gun near the White House is currently playing in Spain. Baxter told U.S. District Court Judge Peter Messitte that he is obsessed with guns. Messitte said the sentence was based on Baxter’s history. The Judge said that Baxter had basically injured himself with the crime, and he was in effect on injured reserve. Baxter last played in the NBA with the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2005-2006 season. When asked why Baxter was no longer with the Bobcats the next season an official with the team said that his contract had run out and Charlotte chose not to re-sign him. Baxter won a NCAA Championship with the University of Maryland in 2002.
