Team USA scored early and often as they face Team Canada in the FIBA Championships of the Americas Saturday in? Las Vegas winning the one sided game 113-63. Team Canada made one legitimate threat down the stretch of the first quarter to cut USA’s lead to 28-21, but they were never in the game after that. Carmelo Anthony paced Team USA with 25 points, and Michael Redd added 19 including five treys. But it was the defensive intensity that USA showed after the first?quarter is what really gave them the momentum. Team USA is now 3-0 and will face the National Team from Brazil?that features NBA star Leandro Barbosa on Sunday. Team Canada falls to?2-2 and will have Sunday as an off day.

The Boston Globe reported on Saturday that the Boston Celtics have signed free agent veteran James Posey to a two year deal. The contract is reported to be worth $7 million over the two years with the second year of the pact a players option. Posey who started his career in Denver, played the last two seasons for the Miami heat including their championship season of 2006. Thursday Miami head coach Pat Riley said that the club still hoped to come to terms with the veteran who was getting interest from a number of NBA teams. Posey has averaged 9.5 points and 4.9 boards in his career, although his numbers were reduced by playing with players like Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal the last tow years. Posey has also played with Houston and Memphis during his eight years in the NBA. The 30 year old veteran is also known as a gritty defensive player.

For an athlete who has only played one season in the NBA Alexander Johnson sure has been with a whole lot of teams. Johnson was originally drafted with the 45th pick of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers, but he never played for them. Indiana traded him to Portland plus two future second round picks for the draft rights to James White, but he never played for them. Portland then traded him to the Memphis Grizzlies for a second round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, he did play for them. Last year as a rookie Johnson?averaged 4.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 59 games 19 of which he started. Friday the 6′9″ forward signed a free agent deal with the Miami Heat, terms of the deal were not disclosed. No wonder they call him the “Traveling Man” {Actually they?don’t I just made the name up, but I kind of like it!} Johnson who is 24?played three years for Florida State. He is expected to be the backup to Udonis Haslem.

The Indianapolis Star is reporting that former Indiana Pacers shooting guard Reggie Miller will give up his comeback attempt and stay in retirement. Miller was approached last month by the Boston Celtics, to return to the NBA which he retired from in 2005. Boston had wanted him to be the backup to recently acquired Ray Allen, as well as to come into games at crucial moments down the stretch, and during the playoffs. Miller has undergone a series of twice a day workouts to see if his body could withstand the rigors of a NBA season. He decide that he could physically take the punishment but did not have a strong enough desire to go through an 82 game season and playoffs. Miller will remain a NBA TV Analyst for TNT.

Something tells me that Team USA has come into the FIBA Championship Of the Americas Competition with a new attitude. The?squad that has been out on the court in the first two games, is playing team basketball to it’s fullest, as opposed to the playground antics we saw on the floor from Team USA in 2004 and 2006. Part of the reason is the extended palying time together, part is having a great teaching coach in Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski seems to be the perfect man for the job. The third and most important reason may be the depth of the team. There are enough players that every night can feature a different hero. Thursday it was Milwaukee’s Michael Redd and Denver’s Carmelo Anthony who each had 22 points as?Team USA had their way with the team representing the U.S. Virgin Islands 123-59. This one was a?blowout from the opening? tip, as Team USA started hot and never looked back.?The team shot 50% from three point range(15-30) and? all 12 players scored. The team has an off day on Friday, and then will play Team Canada on Saturday, and the Brazilian Team on Sunday.
