A Good Day For Marcus Williams, But A Bad Day for Marcus Williams

In one of the most ironic events this reporter can remember in NBA recent history, Saturday was a day of joy for Marcus Williams, and a day of frustration for Marcus Williams. Totally confused yet? I thought so! You see we are actually talking about two different NBA players with the same name Marcus Williams! Let’s start with the bad news first, the New Jersey Nets Marcus Williams as we reported on Friday will undergo surgery Monday to repair damage in his right foot. The second year guard has a break of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot, no word on how the injury occurred. The University of Connecticut product played in 79 games last season for New Jersey getting 6.8 points, and 3.3 assists per contest being named to NBA All Rookie Second Team. New Jersey will provide further information after completion of the surgical procedure.
Now the San Antonio Spurs Marcus Williams who was the team’s second round pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, signed a deal with San Antonio according to the team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Williams a 6′7″ forward spent two years at the University of Arizona was awarded First Team All PAC-10 Honors last season. He was number?four in scoring in the conference with 16.6 points, and eighth in the conference in rebounds with 6.7 boards per game and recorded four double-doubles. He played in the Las Vegas Summer League, as well as the?Summer league in Salt Lake City.

After staying pat all off-season the Cleveland Cavaliers have started to do a little shaking up on the eve of NBA Training Camps opening next week. The Cavaliers Saturday traded veteran guard David Wesley to the New Orleans Hornets for forward Cedric Simmons. Simmons who was drafted by the Hornets with the 15th pick of the 2006 NBA Draft played in 43 games in his rookie year including 4 starts and averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 boards per game. The 21 year old Simmons is a 6′9″ forward who went to college at NC State. Wesley who spent a major portion of his career with the Hornets saw very limited action with Cleveland last season.

The Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves completed a trade late Friday night as they swapped two veteran swing men. The Mavericks gave up guard/forward Greg Buckner to the T-Wolves in exchange for veteran guard Trenton Hassell. Hassell who came into the NBA in the?2001-2002 season spent his first two years with the Chicago Bulls, before going to Minnesota where he played the next four seasons. he has career averages of 6.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Buckner made his NBA debut in the 1999-2000 season spending his first three seasons in Dallas. He then played two seasons each with Philadelphia, and Denver before re-signing with Dallas last year. Buckner has averaged 5.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game during his NBA career.

Cleveland Signs Guard Devin Brown

Defending Eastern Conference Champions the Cleveland Cavaliers announced Saturday that they have signed veteran free agent guard Devin Brown to a contract for the upcoming season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 28 year old 6′5″ Brown played for New Orleans last season as he set career highs in points with 11.6, boards with 4.3 and assists with 2.6 per game. Brown saw limited action his first season in the NBA playing in just 7 games for the San Antonio Spurs and 3 games for the Denver Nuggets during the 2002-2003 campaign. However he went back to San Antonio for the next two seasons as his playing time greatly increased, to 58 games in the 2003-2004 season, and 67 games in 2004-2005. He spent the following season with the Utah Jazz before signing with the Hornets last year. Cleveland General Manager Danny Ferry said that Brown is a versatile player who can play many different roles and should be a great asset to the team.

Net’s Thorn Feels His Team Has Two “New Players” Jefferson And Krstic

Friday?s Newark Star Ledger reports that New Jersey Nets President Rod Thorn in his state of the team address on Thursday, that his team is better than last season will basically staying pat during the off-season. The reason? A healthy Richard Jefferson and Nenad Krstic two major pieces that make up a competitive New Jersey Nets team. Krstic,?the center out of Serbia tore his ACL last year, and is reportedly back to 90-95% after surgery. Krstic pre-injury had turned into a force in the middle for New Jersey. Jefferson who suffered from ankle problems last season according to Thorn is healthy again, and expected to be a major contributor for the Nets. After dominating the Eastern Division the last few seasons, most NBA observers feel that may end up playing second best to a reconstituted Boston Celtics team.

Powell And Jefferson Sign With Memphis

The Memphis Grizzlies with NBA Training Camps starting next week, have signed two free agents Friday guard Dontell Jefferson and forward Kasib Powell. Jefferson is a 6′4″ 23 year old guard who played last season in the?NBDL with the League champions Dakota Wizards. Jefferson averaged 9.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game for the Wizards who were coached by David?Joerger now an?assistant coach with Memphis. Powell has been around awhile, bouncing between the NBA and the European Leagues over the last few seasons. The 6′7″ 26 year old power forward played in the Russian Super League for ST. Petersburg, scoring 9.3 points?grabbing 4.4 boards and getting two assists per game. He spent Training?Camp with Minnesota in 2004,?Chicago in 2005, and Orlando last season but did?not make any of those teams regular season rosters.
