Former Boston Celtics legendary center Bill Russell and former University Of North Carolina Tarheels coach Dean Smith topped the list of 20 inductees Wednesday into the FIBA Hall of Fame. Twelve players from ten different countries were chosen as well as four coaches. Russell, won the Olympic Gold Medal with Team USA basketball in 1956, then went on to win 11-13 NBA Championships from 1957-1969. Smith won two NCAA National Championships, and was the coach at the 1976 Olympics when the USA again took the gold. Out of 200 nominations only 20 were inducted. NBA Hall of Fame legends Oscar Robertson, and Magic Johnson did not make the cut! Their names can be submitted again in 2009 when the Hall of Fame Awards are given out next. The third American chosen was Phoenix Mercury General Manager Anne Meyers Drysdale one of three women chosen. She was All-American all four years at UCLA, and ironically was on the 1976 Team USA Women’s Team that won the silver that year.
