Stern Says Referees Will Not Be Punished
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
NBA Commissioner David Stern late Thursday said that there would be no punishment handed out to any current NBA referees for breaking anti-gambling violations in their contracts. Stern speaking to reporters said that up to half of the leagues’s 59 officials may have violated the guidelines. However he has decided that the current rules are too strict and that they merit change. Stern said that he?realizes that they probably violated the rules, and the officials are also aware of the fact. However he blamed the violations on lack of consistent enforcement and the rules being too broad. Stern said that the NBA is now in the process of changing the rules and will come out with a new set of guidelines which will include referees allowed to frequent casinos at designated times of the year.
