Hornets Pick Up Options on Paul And Armstrong
Filed Under Main | Leave a Comment
The New Orleans Times Picayune reported Monday that the New Orleans Hornets have picked up the fourth year option on point guard Chris Paul and the third year option on center Hilton Armstrong. The?Hornets had until?Wednesday to make the moves or both players would have become unrestricted free agents at the conclusion of the season. I had the pleasure of covering Paul?during the first round of?the NCAA Tournament in Cleveland a few years ago.?After seeing this young man play from my courtside perch I told?everybody and anybody that this young man would make a huge impact in the NBA. His numbers his first two years in the?league validate my predictions, as he has averaged 16.6 points 8.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game since being drafted out of Wake Forest. Armstrong who went to school at Connecticut averaged 3.1 points and 2.7 boards per game last season as a rookie.

They probably will not be the best team in the NBA but they just might be one of the league’s biggest. The Miami Heat Monday announced their opening day roster, and it will have five centers! But the name that may cause the biggest stir is not a center but forward Penny Hardaway?who will return to the NBA for the first time since playing just 4 games for the New York Knicks back in the 2005-2006 season. Hardaway who had a try out for Miami early this Summer was in camp on a non-guaranteed contract. Hardaway had retired because of knee pain but appears to be back in playing shape. He is reunited with former teammate center Shaquille O’Neal with whom he played with as they both started their careers with Florida’s other team the Orlando Magic. The four other centers on the roster are Alonzo Mourning, Mark Blount, veteran Earl Barron?and undrafted rookie Joel Anthony. guards on the roster are Dwayne Wade, Smush Parker, Ricky Davis, Jason Williams, Chris Quinn, and rookie Daequan Cook. Forwards Udonis Haslem, Dorrell Wright, and Alexander Johnson fill out the roster.

The Detroit Pistons have their roster down to the NBA Maximum of 15 players after cutting 2007 second round pick Sammy Mejia. Mejia who was the 57th pick in the draft and ?is a product of DePaul University was given a partially guaranteed contract after playing so well in the Las Vegas Summer League. Mejia was expected to beat out veteran Ronald Dupree for the final roster spot, but Dupree got the nod. Mejia who can play at either small forward or shooting guard position was effected when Detroit signed former Washington Wizards Jarvis Hayes. The?Pistons still have three rookies on their roster Rodney Stuckey, who is on the injured list, Arron Afflalo?ho were both first round picks in the 2007 draft. they also have center Cheikh Samb who is from Senegal and was taken in the second round of the 2006 draft. Samb played in Spain last season.
