NBA Commissioner David Stern told reporters in Phoenix, Arizona Thursday that if the?Sonics leaves the city of Seattle their will be no replacement team down the road. Stern spoke to reporters at a press conference promoting the 2009 NBA All-Star game which will be held in Phoenix.

Seattle SuperSonics owner Clay Bennett announced last week that he would be moving the team to Oklahoma City, as soon as he can free himself?from leases at Key Arena. Bennett had asked city leaders to come up with a plan to build a new arena for the Sonics or he would have no choice but to move the franchise. The city which had recently built new facilities for the Mariners, and the Seahawks, would not participate.

Stern told the reporters that he would prefer to see the SuperSonics remain in Seattle. He said that if the team moved he saw no possibility of the NBA ever returning to Seattle, at any time. The SuperSonics were the first Major League team established in Seattle, and has won the only Championship in Major League sports in the city’s history.
