You look at the record of the Memphis Grizzlies and if that’s all you know about them you automatically think they are a bad team. They are 2-7 which means they must be pretty bad, right? Well you would not say that if you saw the hard fought games Memphis played in?Friday and Saturday night. Friday night they lost to one of the best young teams now in the NBA, the New Orleans Hornets?120-118. In that game they shot 50.5% from the field and an astonishing 62.5 % from three point range. New Orleans after beating Minnesota Saturday have a record of 9-2.
Saturday night they took on another elite team the Dallas Mavericks who came into the game with a 6-2 mark. Dallas ended up winning, but the Grizzlies gave them everything they could handle as Dallas squeezed out a 108-105 win. The ?game?was close?all night as Memphis led after the first?quarter 29-27 and trailed 54-53 going into locker rooms at the half.
The key to Dallas’ victory was the guys who have been doing it for them all year long, Josh Howard, Devin Harris, and Dirk Nowitzki. Howard led all scorers with 27 points, and 7 rebounds, Nowitzki had 21 points and 9 boards, and Harris had 19 points and 8 assists. Brandon Bass came off the bench and scored 11 points and pulled down 6 rebounds, while Jason Terry had 10 points and 5 assists. DeSagana Diop had 6 points but led the team in rebounds with 11.
Forward Mike Miller was the leading scorer for the Grizzlies with 23 points, 7 rebounds, Pau Gasol had 15, and 6 rebounds, and Juan Carlos Navarro had 14 points. For the second night in a row Hakim Warrick was a major contributor off the bench for Memphis with 17 points. This young man can ball! Memphis has a nice young nucleus, and Mark Iavaroni is a rookie coach. But this team could surprise some people, if not this year then next year.?
