Iverson, K-Mart lead Nuggets past Kings 101-97

The Denver Nuggets this Saturday night got “The Answer” (Allen Iverson) and a “K-Mart Special” (Kenyon Martin); they came in handy as they combined for 43 points and led the Nuggets to a 101-97 win over the Sacramento Kings at the Pepsi Center. Sacramento managed to stay with Denver in the first quarter as the score was knotted up at 34, thanks to 15 points by Kings’ swingman John Salmons in the period, while Denver forward Carmelo Anthony scored 10.Iverson would score 19 in the first half as the Nuggets’ lead would go into double-digits; he capped a 14-2 run with a tip-in with 8:02 left in the half. Denver would go into halftime with a 59-47 lead; they would increase their lead to 65-52 before Sacramento would produce a 16-4 run, capped by a Salmons’ 3-pointer with 4:38 left in the 3rd. Then a Salmons steal and two layups by Kings guard Beno Udrih gave Sacramento a 76-71 lead late in the 3rd period.

The Nuggets trailed Sacramento 80-77 early in the fourth quarter when Denver’s J.R. Smith made a 3-point play to tie the game. Nuggets guard Anthony Carter made a layup and after a Kings turnover, Iverson made a layup which would give Denver an 84-80 lead. Sacramento’s Ron Artest and Udrih hit baskets to tie the game with 7:46 remaining in the game.

Sacramento trailed 96-95 when Denver’s Martin made 2 free throws and Carter another. Kings guard Fernando Garcia’s 2 free throws cut the Nuggets’ lead to 2, which set up the final seconds. With Denver ahead 99-97, Iverson turned the ball over and the Kings started a fast break; Garcia would then miss a 3-point attempt with 2 seconds left which sealed the win for the Nuggets.

Denver’s leading scorer was Iverson with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 10 assists; Martin added a strong effort, pouring in 20 with 12 rebounds. Carter pitched in with 17 and 9 assists while Carmelo Anthony had a quiet night, scoring 14 on 5-of-16 shooting. Sacramento was led by Salmons with 25, while Udrih added 24 and Garcia chipped in with 21. Kings center Mikki Moore had a double-double, scoring 10 while grabbing 13 boards in a losing effort. Denver (13-8) continues their homestand by hosting the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday night, while Sacramento (7-12) flies to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks Monday.
