Undermanned Wizards Muzzle Timberwolves 102-88

Balanced scoring trumped the fact that the Washington Wizards only had 9 healthy players in uniform against Minnesota Tuesday. Six Wizards players scored in double-digits as Washington defeated Minnesota 102-88 at Washington.Neither team shot very well - 42.4% for Washington and 40.7% for Minnesota - yet the Wizards held a 10-point lead going into the third quarter. Washington was up by as many as 20, after a 10-0 run, making it a 66-46 Wizards lead. But Minnesota chipped away; after forward Al Jefferson scored 2 straight baskets then Corey Brewer made a pair of free throws, the T-Wolves reduced Washington’s lead down to 85-79 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the game.

But Washington responded with a 7-0 run of its own, capped by 2 dunks by Brendan Heywood and a 3-point play by Antawn Jamison. That series of scoring gave Washington an advantage that Minnesota could not catch up to. Washington, with 6 players in double-digits, were led by Jamison with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists; this is Jamison’s seventh consecutive double-double, something he hasn’t done since December 27, 2000 to January 8, 2001. Caron Butler added 20, along with grabbing 10 boards and dishing out 4 assists. Roger Mason chipped in with 17 from off the bench.

Minnesota was led by Craig Smith who scored a career-high 36 points with 8 rebounds; Jefferson added 14, while Sebastian Telfair recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 assists. Washington (11-10) now travels south to take on the Miami Heat Thursday, while Minnesota (3-16) goes East to take on the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.
