Poor shooting and a wasted effort by New Jersey Nets point guard Jason Kidd – a triple double – doomed the Nets from the beginning of this game; Los Angeles Clippers forward Tim Thomas and center Chris Kaman led a balanced scoring attack as they defeated the Nets 91-82 at the Izod Center Tuesday night. Both teams struggles with their shooting – a game of attrition, so to speak – through the first two quarters, with Los Angeles taking a 5-point lead in the final 2 minutes of the half. But New Jersey erased that deficit with a 3-pointer by Kidd, a basket by Vince Carter and a jumper by forward Malik Allen as the buzzer sounded; that mini-run tied the game at 46. Neither team could really pull away and the Nets trialed 67-63 at the end of 3. New Jersey continued its errant shooting as Los Angeles upped its advantage to 81-74; the Nets wouldn’t seriously challenge after that juncture.
Los Angeles was led by Thomas and Kaman with 18 points each; Kaman also grabbed 14 rebounds. Corey Magette scored 13 despite 1-of-6 shooting, along with 10 boards. New Jersey was led by Richard Jefferson with 21 points on 6-of-21 shooting; Carter added 16, while Kidd recorded a triple-double – 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Los Angeles (9-12) next travels to Charlotte to take on the Bobcats Wednesday night, while New Jersey (9-14) remains home to host the Cleveland Cavaliers Friday.
