The Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs were deadlocked at 85-85 Wednesday night, with time expiring in regulation, and an overtime period, almost a certainty. But Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay, thought differently as he shot a three point shot attempt over the outstretched arms of Tim Duncan, and the ball tickled the twine as the buzzer was going off. The Grizzlies sent the Memphis crowd happy after defeating the defending League Champions 88-85.Mike Miller scored a game high 31 points, and Gay who hit his only trey in three tries with the buzzer beater had 23 in the win.

Memphis took control early in this game as San Antonio was still without point guard Tony Parker out with a left ankle sprain, who shows his value more and more with each game missed. Parker who is San Antonio’s leading scorer has missed four straight games. The Grizzlies roared out to a 31-19 at the end of the first quarter, and extended it to 49-35 at the half. They led the Spurs by 17 points going into the final quarter, but that’s when San Antonio got busy. They erased the deficit to tie the game at 85-85 as Manu Ginobili dunked with 2.4 seconds left in the game setting the stage for Rudy Gay’s heroics.

Miller who scored a season high with his 31 points, shot 12-18 from the field, 5-11 from outside the arc, and 2-2 from the line, he also had 6 rebounds, 1 block, 1 assist. Gay just missed a double-double by one board as he had 9 rebounds, along with his 23 points, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal.  Juan Carlos Navarro scored 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and Damon Stoudamire scored 10, 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal.

Ginobili led San Antonio with 20 points, in their second consecutive loss, third in a row on the road. You have to go back to April 2005 for the last time that occurred. Duncan had a double-double, 16 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, Michael Finley scored 11 points, 5 boards, 1 assist, and Jacque Vaughn in for Parker scored 10 points, 5 assists, 1 rebound, 1 steal. Memphis is now 8-17, while San Antonio is now 18-7.
