At the end of the 2006-2007 season, Scott Skiles head coach of the Chicago Bulls was described by most NBA observers as an “Up & Comer.” Skiles led Chicago to a first round victory in the NBA Post Season against defending champs the Miami Heat. The Bulls then played a hard fought series against the New Jersey Nets, before succumbing. But things looked bright for the first time in a long time in the “Windy City”, as the Bulls had what looked like a strong nucleus comprised of Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, and Kirk Hinrich, as well as the ever improving Andres Nocioni. Add a savvy veteran like Ben Wallace at center, and a young sparkplug in rookie Joachim Noah, it looked like it would be smooth sailing for the Bulls in 2007-2008.

Well if Skiles was perceived as an “Up & Comer” last spring, Christmas Eve he would have to be reclassified as a “Down & Outer.” Monday the Chicago Bulls announced the firing of Skiles as the coach of the team, an interim coach has not been named as of this writing. Chicago General Manager John Paxson described?the?move as difficult bit?necessary at this time. Chicago currently has a 9-16 record and is in last place in the NBA Central Division 10 games behind Division leaders the Detroit Pistons. Skiles took over the reigns as head coach in late November 2003, succeeding Bill Cartwright. His record with Chicago was 165-172, but he did get the Bulls to the playoffs three straight years. Unfortunately, Skiles probably could see the handwriting on the wall, as the team played inconsistently all season. But Scott, keep thinking positive, there could very well be an?opening coming up in New York, in the next few weeks.
