Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
Richard “Rip” Hamilton scored 22 points, and the Detroit Pistons won their sixth straight game Wednesday night defeating their hosts the New Jersey Nets, 101-83. It was the seventh straight game that the Pistons have held their opponents under 90 points. Although Detroit has scorers, in Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace, just to name a few, defense has always been the Pistons strength. The lower the score, the more likely it is that Detroit will win the game, as the Boston Celtics found out last week. The Celtics suffered their first defeat at home last Wednesday night to the Pistons, 87-85.
The two teams played competitively in the first half as there were 8 ties, and the lead changed hands 12 times. Pistons led 26-24 at the end of the first quarter, and by just one point at the half 45-44. The third quarter was when Detroit took charge at both ends of the floor. Pistons shot an amazing 78% from the floor in the third quarter as they outscored New Jersey 31-18, taking the fragile lead of one point to a very healthy 76-62 at the end of the third. New?Jersey basically was out of the game the fourth quarter, as the Nets fans went home with coal in their day after Christmas stockings.
Hamilton shot 10-16 from the floor, 2-2 at the line for his game high 22 points, he also had 4 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal. Chauncey Billups had a double-double for Detroit, 17 points, 10 assists, 2 steals, Antonio McDyess scored?15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. Wallace scored 13 points, 6 boards, 2 blocks, 1 assist, 1 steal, and Jason Maxiell scored 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist. Rodney Stuckey the rookie who made such a big impression in the preseason, only to get injured just before the regular season commenced, had a nice night off the bench shooting 3-7 from the floor plus 1-1 at the line, scoring 7 points, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound.
Vince Carter had a nice game for New Jersey, shooting 8-11 from the floor, 2-3 from beyond the arc, 3-3 at the line, for 21 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. Richard Jefferson scored 18 points, 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, Bostjan Nachbar, who has been a key contributor this season for the Nets scored 13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal.
