Two things seem to agree with the Portland Trail Blazers: Christmas Day and winning basketball games on Christmas Day.? Of the 13 Christmas contests that Portland has been involved with, they have won 12 in a row.? Add this year to the total as tight defense by Portland pushed them to the victory over the Seattle SuperSonics 89-79 at the Rose Garden Tuesday.

Portland went up 46-41 as the clock wound down in the first half,? but Seattle’s Kevin Durant drained a 3-pointer to narrow their lead to 46-44 at halftime.? Seattle got ample assistance from swingman Wally Szczerbiak who scored 15 first-half points, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.? In the third quarter, Portland pulled away with a 16-2 run, capped by a trey by Brandon Roy that put the Blazers ahead 66-50.? Portland guard Jarrett Jack’s 3-pointer made it a 89-75 lead with 2:11 left in the game.

Portland was led by Roy and Jack with 17 points each, while Steve Blake and Channing Frye added 12 apiece; Joel Przybilla grabbed 16 rebounds.? Kevin Durant lead all Seattle scorers with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocked shots.? Szczerbiak added 19 in a losing effort.? Portland (16-12) continues their homestand by hosting the Minnesta Timberwolves Friday night, while Seattle (8-20) returns home to host the Boston Celtics Thursday night.?
