An Open Letter To Mark Cuban: Dirk Needs Help From Kidd

Subject: How To Get That Championship Ring
Dear Mr. Cuban,
Some believe the Dallas Mavericks are a legitimate contender for the 2008 NBA Finals. The Mavs are currently 20-11. The record may indicate that they are a winning team but that is a far cry from greatness. The always tinkering Avery Johnson has been bringing Jason Terry off the bench and starting Devin Harris. Devin Harris is a decent PG averaging 13.7 PPG, 5.4 AST, 31.4MIN, and A/TO ratio of 2.43. In recent months trade rumors have been swirling about Jason Kidd. When you compare Devin Harris’ numbers to Jason Kidd’s you realize Harris is an average player with some upside. Jason Kidd is averaging 11 PPG, 10.4 AST, 37.3 MIN, and A/TO ratio of 2.87. Jason Kidd’s ability to dish the rock could propel an NBA franchises to prime-time. Now this may be an unfair comparison, but this point needs to be made, how can the Mavs truly contend for a title with an average PG?
The Mavs live on the perimeter. Without a PG who can penetrate and create space for Josh Howard and Dirk Nowitzki they will struggle against the Spurs. Josh Howard’s best attribute is his tenacious defense. He has however became a fine shooter and an athletic scorer in the Richard Jefferson mold. Kidd would open up Howard’s driving lanes and enable him to unleash the true beast. A Maverick in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is defined as “an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party.” Though the Mavericks defied NBA logic last year, shooting the leather off the ball, they have now crashed to normalcy. They are no longer the definition of a “Maverick,” instead they represent the ordinary. They fall into the lump of good but not great Western Conference Teams- Mavs, Suns, Nuggets, Warriors, Hornets, the Jazz, and my feisty Blazers.
MR. Cuban, in order to get Kidd the Mavs would have to give up either 1) Terry and Harris or 2) Howard and Harris. I don’t think that you would be willing to part with a promising young PG and a stud small forward. Growing up as a Philly sports fan Rocky was a legend. Since Philly has not had a sports championship in 25 years he became their champion. Adrienne, in Rocky 2, had the right idea. As she laid there in a hospital bed she asked Rocky to do one thing for her “Win.” Mr. Cuban, you must do anything in your power to win a title. The Mavericks need to defy NBA logic once again and make this deal for Kidd. Unlike many NBA owners who just want to be competitive, deep down in your soul Mark, you want to win! So maybe you should spend January 1, (after all there are no NBA games scheduled) soul searching watching Rocky 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 (Rocky 5 does not count). Your team won 67 games last year. What did that get them? Nothing but being bounced out of the playoffs in the first round! Last year the Mavericks were favored to win the championship. Mr Cuban, it’s time to wake up! No one on your team is getting any younger. Dirk has lost some of his swagger that he played with last year. The evidence is his 30% three point percentage (42% last year) and 22 PPG (25 PPG last year). Stack’s game is more below the rim each passing year. Jason Terry is completely off kilter coming off the bench. The Mavs need energy and a renewed excitement. Jason Kidd would be that spark! Kidd wants to win! He isn’t getting any younger and he wants that ever elusive championship. Mark, as a die hard fan of the NBA brand, I beg of you to mend the broken fence. Listen to the fighter’s heart beating in your chest. Bring Dallas that championship it deserves! Bring Jason Kidd to the Mavericks! A Happy and Prosperous New Year to You and Your franchise!
Sincerely Yours,
Gregory Dix

Mr. Dix makes a great points, and Dallas Mavericks will not win a championship without the likes of J. Kidd. Jason Kidd is a game changer with his passing abilities and his fast break presence. Great Article-Letter

You still must be drunk from all the fuzzy navels you had last night to think Kidd’s going to the Mavs!

the only one who could put the mavs over the top - would be Kobe- he has the heart and the rings to back him up- both which are lacking with the current MAVs. I’m not a Kidd fan- may be they should bring back Nash….

Daddyrick? I’m not a Kobe fan. He is perhaps the best player in the NBA right now. But, don’t forget that Kobe has yet to win a ring w/o Shaq. Kobe is too much of a boghog to play for the Mavs. Plus, could you see Kobe in Texas? No way in bleep.

I loved the Rocky reference. I myself am a Philly native. It is a great place for basketball. Steven A Smith is from Philly. He is a nice voice for Philly on ESPN.
As for the Kidd idea. It isn’t anything new. This rumor has been floating for ages. I agree as a NBA loyalist (who watches 1000 games/yr), Kidd would open up the floor for Josh Howard. Any NBA analyst can see that. The fact of the matter is Cuban won’t pull this trigger. He is too much of an egomanic to admit he is wrong about Devin Harris.

Good Stuff. Nice Article. I like your thinking. How about the overrated “Badger” Devin Harris, swingman Maruice Ager (Mich. State), undersized PF Brandon Bass (Intriguing LSU Tiger Talent), and a 1st rounder for the former Cal Golden Bear and the Passing “Wizard” and Triple-Double Legend that is Jason Kidd ~ he’s a perfect fit for many reasons, as his strength & size combination would be a great defensive match-up to stop/contain/slowdown the likes of Parker, Williams, Paul, Davis, and Nash (West offers Top PG’s on solid teams) most importantly his defense would be the big acquisition here, then of course on offense with his court vision, rebounding on both ends of the floor, and his ability to run the fastbreak and dish dimes and helpers out fantastically, I can see now and envision MANY, upon MANY alley-oop lobs to Mr. Josh Howard (Wake Forest) for some monstorous dunks and thunderous slam, jam, thank you ma’ams!

Greg makes a lot of great points. The PG really is the quarterback of the team, and J. Kidd is one of the best in the game. A move to the Mavs may be just the thing for both him and also the Mavs. Keep up the great work, GD!!!

Mark Cuban, I’ll give ya BIG present if you sign Jason Kid…….cough, cough
January 2nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
If anyone remembers, the Mavs drafted Jason Kidd. Why would Kidd want to play for a team that already lost faith in his ability?

All sequels following Rocky IV should be considered sacrilegious. Cuban would more likely to find inspiration from watching “Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot.”

Some random thoughts…
I don’t know much about the current contract issues. Now that I’ve made the disclaimer, I think the Mavs needs are obvious….they need either a point guard or a point forward to set up Howard and Dirk consistantly for good looks and defend. They also need Dampier to play like it is a contract year…if he still has it in him. They seem to be at their best this year when they bring it on the defensive end, as the team is relying more on howard’s intensity to rack up w’s. The rest of the nba is better this year than last….the mavs biggest problem might be that they are a victim of increased expectations due to last year’s record.

So Mr. Dix, what you’re saying is you want a PG who is about to be on the wrong side of 35, is a wife beater, gropes women and threatens them in a nightclub and takes games off because he has a migraine? When you let Mr. Cuban borrow the Disneyland t-shirt you also should have told him about your favorite ride….Dumbo.

Jim,
Yes I am. I really don’t care what he does off the court. As long as he distributes the ball and sets up Dirk and Josh. Off the court antics mean nothing if you are executing on the floor. Living proof of that- Dennis Rodman!

Greg, Greg, Greg… If it were only the things off the court then I could tolerate your argument. Bottom line..Kidd is just that a Kid. When he doesn’t get his way he suddenly has a migraine and can’t play. Get him out of NJ and take him to Dallas. When the season is on the line I hope you have the Excedrin. He is one step up from Stephon Marbury…a compiler with nothing to show but good stats.

Are U INSANE? He is nothing like Starbury…. That man has completly lost his mind. Of course I might lose my mind as well if I played for the Knicks. Kidd would stay in line with a team like Dallas. Kidd performs “above” his stats if you ask me. What is the record of the NETS w/o Kidd? I doubt it is good….Kidd wants to win a championship. I can’t say the same for Starbury
