You knew it had to happen eventually.? Any time you win 13 games in a row speaks volumes about your team.? And it looked like the Portland Trail Blazers would continue their win streak.? But a cold spell during the third quarter did them in, enabling the Utah Jazz to pull out the win against the Trail Blazers 111-101 Monday at Salt Lake City.
Portland opened the game hot, making 11-of-15 and looked like they would continue their streak; however, it would come to a screeching halt after Trail Blazers forward James Jones drained a 3-pointer to put Portland up 71-65.? Utah’s Deron Williams hit a pair of jumpers, while Carlos Boozer made a dunk; Williams would then make a 3-pointer during an 11-0 run that would put Utah up 77-71 midway through the third period.? However, Portland would go scoreless from the 6:27 mark - when Jones drained a 3 - to 3:30 left in the quarter when Jones made a free throw.
The Blazers went without a basket until Channing Frye’s basket with 1:53 left in the period, ending a Utah 8-0 run and cutting their lead to 85-76; Portland entered the fourth quarter, trailing 87-79.? After an illegal screen was whistled on Utah, Portland’s Brandon Roy cut the?Jazz lead to 89-85, but Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko drained a 3.? Shortly after, Kyle Korver would score a 3-point play, then Kirilenko took a steal all the way to a dunk to put Utah up 97-89 with 6:44 left to go.
Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge tipped in a miss, then Utah’s Paul Millsap made a layup as did Korver, increasing the Jazz?lead to 101-91.? Portland’s Travis Outlaw would make a late trey that got the Blazers to within 105-98, but 2 free throws made by Utah’s Korver sealed the win.? Utah had 6 players in double-digits, led by Boozer with 19 points and 9 rebounds;?Williams added 18 and 8 assists, while Matt Harpring chipped in with 15?while grabbing 8 boards.?
Portland was led by Aldridge with a strong 36-point effort; Roy scored 17 with 4 rebounds and 5 assists, while Jones chipped in with 15.? Utah (17-16) remains at home to host the Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday, while Portland (18-13) travels to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves - also on Wednesday.
