USBL Will Not Play Games In 2008
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
The Associated Press reported Thursday that the United States Basketball League, commonly known as the USBL will not play any games in the 2008 calendar year. The league has decided to cancel it’s schedule for the upcoming season, looking to reorganize a league that has gone through some hard times in the past year. The USBL is a minor league that has helped players get to the NBA, including former Atlanta Hawks guard Spud Webb, and current Phoenix suns guard Raja Bell.
The league based in Milford, Connecticut, formed 23 years ago saw three teams drop out of their then eight team league last year. In mid-season last year, teams folded in Jackson, Mississippi, and New Castle Delaware, and the Albany Patroons who were a playoff team last year, never participated in the post season, because their owner did not want to spend any more money. The League currently has five teams, but a few of them had expressed reservations about fielding a team this season. Instead what the league has decide to do is suspend operations, for this year, and hopefully come back with a more successful product in 2009.
