Big Baby Has Break Out Bash Boston Beats Detroit 92-85
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
During the era of the “Celtics Mystique” 1957-1992, the Boston Celtics captivated fans not only with stars like Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, Cowens, Bird, Parish, and McHale, but with role players as well. During the 1980’s the crowd would go ballistic when the court announcer would scream “Terry Duuuuuuuuuuerod for three.” Now that the Celtics are prominent again in Boston Sports fans hearts, and minds, they have already adopted Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen as life long members of the Green Team. But Boston may have found their newest “Cult Hero” Glen “Big Baby” Davis who had a breakout game Saturday night scoring a career high 20 points, and leading Boston to a 92-85 win over the Detroit Pistons. The win puts an end to Detroit’s 11 game winning streak, extends Boston’s to 9 games, and avenges the Celtic’s sole home loss this season . Detroit is the only team to beat Boston in the “New Garden” winning 87-85 on December 19.
Playing the Detroit Pistons, is not like playing say the Phoenix Suns, the game will not be pretty, and there will not be a lot of scoring going on. The Pistons forte is a half court well played defensive game, their opponent has one of two choices. Dictate the flow of the game and change the rhythm and tempo of the contest( hard to do) or beat them at their own game(sometimes even harder.) Boston was able to do the latter Saturday night.
Detroit simply smothered the Celtics in the first quarter, leading 22-12 at the end of the period, but Boston was able to cut the lead just to 2 points at the end of the half Pistons leading 43-41. Pistons still led at the end of the third quarter but Boston got serious in the last period. Boston took the lead at the 6:41 mark of the final quarter 76-74 and never looked back.
Davis the rookie center from LSU shot 8-10 from the field and 4-5 from the line for his game high 20 points, he also grabbed 4 boards. Paul Pierce scored 19 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, Garnett scored 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 blocked shot. Tony Allen had his second consecutive nice game from the bench for Boston, scoring 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 steal.
Detroit was led by Richard Hamilton who shot 6-16 from the floor, 5-6 from the line for 18 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds. Chauncey Billups, scored 17 points, 6 assists, 4 boards, 1 steal, Rasheed Wallace scored 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocked shots. Jason Maxiell came off the bench and scored 13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal. Boston is now a NBA best 29-3, while the Pistons are now 26-8.
