Los Angeles Clippers guard Sam Cassell (right)

Like anything else, NBA rumors are constant and for the most part untrue; but that doesn’t stop the spreading, regardless.  The hottest rumor going right now is, according to Jon Barry of ESPN.com and verified by the Orange County Register, Cassell could provide some insurance in the event that Celtics starting guard Rajon Rondo has more back problems.

Cassell, even at 38, is still considered a valued piece for a team that has champiuonship aspirations; he is in the final year of a 2-year contract paying him $6.15 million this season; Cassell stated that he plans to play one more season.  Cassell also said that trade speculation doesn’t bother him as he knows that it is business, in nature.  What’s most telling is the statement Cassell made about his current skills: “I know for a fact that I can play at a high level.  I might (not) score 26 points for eight straight games, like the first year I got here.  But I know for a fact that I can get 16-17 points a night, at the age of 38.”  Yeah, OK Sam - if you say so.  And I think it is highly unlikely that Boston wants to take on additional salary at this point in time - therefore, I don’t see a deal happening.
