Memphis Grizzlies guard Damon Stoudemire (right)

In a move that will benefit everyone involved, point guard Damon Stoudemire and the Memphis Grizzlies are close to a buyout agreement that would allow Stoudemire to become a free agent and sign with one of several clubs interested in him.  Some prominent teams to watch for - the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns.

Also a possibility is the chance that the Grizzlies may decide against a buyout if one of several teams who are seeking Stoudemire up their offer for him in any potential trade talks.  Besides the Celtics and Suns, the Miami Heat (why?), Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets all have expressed an interest in Stoudemire.  Stoudemire, until about December December 30, was the starting point guard; Mike Conley has been the starter ever since.

A source close to the trade talks indicates that the situation was being impacted by the possibility of point guard Sam Cassell being either traded or bought out by the Los Angeles Clippers.  Cassell is currently making $6.156 million; Stoudemire, on the other hand, is making $4.35 million this season and is has one season remaining at $4.65 million - half of which is guaranteed.  Of the 5 teams interested in Stoudemire, it appears the Celtics have the greatest need at point guard as they don’t have a backup PG backing up injured Rajon Rondo.  Expect something major to happen by no later than Wednesday of next week.
