And Zo It Goes, Mourning Meets With The Media
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
Alonzo Mourning is a competitor, Alonzo Mourning is a survivor. The former Georgetown center returned to the NBA after receiving a kidney transplant, a procedure that literally saved his life. Now the Miami Heat center who was lost for at least the season, after having surgery performed on his right knee and his right leg faces another challenge. And he has not decided yet whether or not he wants to undertake it. Mourning who will turn 38 years old next month addressed the media Monday on whether or not he wants to face another comeback to the Association.
Last week an interview with the Miami Heat website quoted Mourning as saying he was officially retired. Less than a day later the Heat media relations staff was issuing a retraction. Monday the veteran talked about the injury that took place on December 19, resulting in his tearing his patella tendon and his right quadricep. Mourning told reporters that his physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick was concerned that he may never be able to walk again. The kneecap was completely out of joint, and Selesnick told Mourning he had never seen such a severe injury. Mourning is able to walk with the help of a cane, and he stressed that if he were to attempt a comeback it would be a long and arduous process. Mourning told reporters “Right now, my focus is just to get healthy. I haven’t really thought about if I’m going to retire or not. But my focus is getting healthy, being able to run and walk, and once I overcome that hurdle I’ll be prepared to let you know if I’m going to play again.”
Now this could just be the result of Miami not wanting to lose the salary cap exception, that they would have if Mourning retires at the end of the season. I am not a “Capologist” nor do I pretend to understand the complexities, of the NBA salary structure. But I am not ready to count Mourning out, he has shown us too often you can’t keep a good man down.
