Boston’s “Elite Three” were down to just one, as Kevin Garnett was out with a strained abdominal muscle, and Ray Allen was down and out with the flu. Paul Pierce the one remaining?member had one of his worst games of the season, was scoreless ?in the first half and would end for only 7 points in the game. But the Celtics were an offensive juggernaut, due to some very unlikely sources. Reserve forward Leon Powe, came off the bench and recorded a double-double with a career high 25 points, and 11 rebounds, and three other Boston players scored at least 20 points, as the Celtics had one of their most convincing wins of the month defeating the Miami Heat Tuesday night 117-87.

Miami after snapping their 15 game losing streak, Saturday as they beat the Indiana Pacers 98-96?looked like they were just going through the motions in this contest. Miami head coach Pat Riley was none too pleased with the efforts as he spoke to reporters after the game “I’m embarrassed by the effort. It’s almost as though the ending of the losing streak pulled the plug. Because we didn’t bring anything.”

The Celtics jumped out to a 31-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, and had a 64-42 lead as the two teams went to their respective lockers rooms at the half. Boston increased their advantage to 94-61, at the end of the third, the fourth quarter was nothing but extended garbage time.

Powe, who I first covered when he played in?the “McDonald’s All-American?Game” after his senior year of high school, has showed potential in the NBA. But this was definitely his breakout game, as he shot 9-13 from the floor, 7-9 from the line for his career high 25 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist. Starting guard Rajon Rondo scored 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, Tony Allen subbing for Ray Allen scored 20 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks. Eddie House also scored 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals.

Mark Blount had another nice game as starting center for Miami, as he shot 7-12 from the floor, 6-9 from the line for a team high 20 points, ?5 rebounds. Luke Jackson came off the bench shooting 4-5 from outside the arc, and scored 14 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, Earl Baron was the only other Miami player in double figures, with 10 points, 6 rebounds. Boston is now at a NBA?best record 35-8, Miami is now 9-34.
