Seattle rookie Kevin Durant, broke an 83-83 tie with a three point bucket with 59 seconds left in the game, and the SuperSonics held on to win against the New York Knicks Saturday night 86-85. The win marks the third in a row for Seattle who broke a 14 game losing streak earlier this week when they defeated the reigning NBA Champs the San Antonio Spurs.
The two teams started out in the first quarter looking like neither team could sink a shot in the ocean?if they were standing on the shore, as Seattle led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. New York seemed to come out of their haze in the second quarter, as they had a 38-34 advantage at the end of the half. Seattle finally woke up in the third quarter as they grabbed a 63- 61 lead at the end of the third quarter. The game remained tight throughout the final period, until Durant scored the winning bucket with 59 seconds remaining. Jamal Crawford put New York within 1 point as he hit a four foot jumper with 44 seconds remaining. The game came down to one final shot as Knicks guard Nate Robinson fired up a trey from 26 feet out with 1 second remaining. Robinson missed the basket, Seattle’s Delonte West?grabbed the rebound, and Seattle had their first three game winning streak of the season.
Durant, who earlier this week was named the NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month for January had a tough night shooting. But he scored when it counted. The rookie? forward shot 7-21 from the floor, 1-1 from outside the arc, and 6-8 from the line for a team high 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 1 assist. Chris Wilcox was the only other Sonics player in double figures as he recorded a double-double, scoring 20 points, 10 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal in the win.
Zach Randolph led all scorers as he shot 9-13 from the floor, 6-9 from the line for 24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal. Jamal Crawford scored 23 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist,?Quentin Richardson scored 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal. David Lee registered a double-double for the Knicks, 10 points, 10 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal. Seattle is now 12-35, New York’s record is 14-33.
