Iverson Makes Buzzer-Beater In OT, Nuggets Edge Trail Blazers 105-103

The Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers played a tough, hard-fought game through 4 quarters to a tie.? Overtime was hard-fought, as well, but a jumper by Denver’s Allen Iverson with less than a second left, giving the Nuggets a 105-103 win over the Trail Blazers Monday night at the Rose Garden.

The Blazers got off to a slow start and couldn’t make a shot from the floor until Channing Frye’s jumper with 4:45 left in the first quarter; Denver’s Anthony Carter made a layup, giving the Nuggets a 33-17 lead.? But Portland would go on a 16-3 run, capped by Steve Blake’s 3-pointer to cut the Nuggets’ lead to 40-36 in the second quarter.? Denver would go into halftime with a 50-44 lead.

Both teams shot well in the third period, as they went into the fourth quarter knotted at 78.? Denver’s Iverson made a jumper to give the Nuggets an 82-81 edge in the fourth quarter; J.R. Smith added a trey and Linas Kleiza’s dunk extended their lead to 6.? Portland would regain the lead on Jarrett Jack’s layup and free throw made it 90-89.? The Blazers held on to a narrow lead down the stretch, but Denver kept it close and Iverson’s 3-pointer put the Nuggets up 100-99 with 39.4 seconds left.

Portland’s Travis Outlaw was fouled with 2.9 seconds left in regulation and made 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 100; Iverson’s desperation 3-point attempt failed, sending the game into overtime.? Both teams were rather sluggish in the overtime period until Iverson’s game-winner with 0.9 seconds left.? Denver was led by Carmelo Anthony with 28 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists; Iverson scored 25 – including 3 treys – with 6 rebounds and 8 assists, while Kleiza added 15 from off the bench.? Kenyon Martin recorded a double-double with 13 and 11 rebounds.

Portland’s high scorer was Brandon Roy with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists; Martell Webster and Jack scored 17 each – Jack also grabbed 9 boards and dished out 9 assists, while Outlaw added 16 with 10 rebounds.? Denver (29-18) returns home to host divisional rival Utah Jazz on Wednesday, while Portland (27-20) continues their homestand by hosting the Chicago Bulls – also on Wednesday.
