It’s A Done Deal, Shaq Goes To Phoenix
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
Phoenix Suns fans got their first to see their newest player as former Miami Heat center Shaquille O’Neal waived to the fans from the stands in the Suns home arena Wednesday night. O’Neal after completing and passing a physical had been traded from Miami to Phoenix, in a?deal we at Slam Dunk Central first reported Tuesday. ?O’Neal went to Phoenix in exchange for forward Shawn Marion, and guard Marcus Banks. Phoenix fans gave O’Neal a huge ovation, and then he pointed to his NBA Championship ring, and signaled with a thumbs up. The Suns fans at the U.S. Airways center went ballistic.
Although the deal makes sense for the Heat, who are going nowhere this season, at least at first glance this would be at best a risky proposition for Phoenix. The Suns are currently in first place in the Pacific Division, with a record of 34-14 going into Wednesday’s game, second best in the Western Conference. Although Marion had made statements before the season, saying he wanted to be traded, his teammates seemed to convince him that Phoenix was a good spot for him. He has played in 47 games this season, averaging 15.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, per game. O’Neal has been injured since December 22, when he slid into the scorers table diving for a loose ball banging his left hip. Shaq has not played since January 21, as Miami coach Pat Riley decided to shut him down for two weeks. O’Neal will be 36 years old and is in his sixteenth season in the Association. Suns General Manager Steve Kerr took a huge gamble with this move, the neophyte executive better hope the dice roll his way.
