?????????????????????????????????Sacramento Kings forward Ron Artest, right, goes to the basket against Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko and forward Carlos Boozer during the third quarter of their game, played Friday night. Sacramento defeated Utah 117-104.

The Sacramento Kings, with the able assistance of Kevin Martin, going to the free-throw line often (40-of-50 from the charity stripe)?and managing to pull away late in the game, sent the home crowd delighted as they snapped the Utah Jazz’ 10-game winning streak with a 117 104 win Friday night at Arco Arena.

Both teams shot relatively well in the first quarter, with Sacramento holding onto a 32-26 lead going into the second quarter; the Kings’ Kevin Martin scored 22 first-half points, enabling Sacramento to hold a slim 58-57 edge at halftime.? Trailing since the game’s?opening minutes, Utah scored 9 straight points to take a 77-73 lead at the 4:46 mark of the third period; but the Kings’ Quincy Douby drained a trey with 17 seconds left in the quarter, putting the Kings up 88-87 going into the fourth quarter.

Douby and reserve John Salmons proved to be important in the final period; Salmons made consecutive layups and Douby made back-to-back 3-pointers in a 10-4 run that put the Kings ahead to stay 109-99 with 5:10 left to go in the game.? Sacramento’s leading scorer was Martin with 27 points, 5 rebounds, an assist and a pair of steals; Ron Artest scored 22 with 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.? ????????????????????????????????????????? Phoenix Suns forward/center Amare Stoudemire (#32) scores two over Seattle SuperSonics forward Kurt Thomas during the first quarter of their game, played Friday night. Stoudemire scored 33 points, leading Phoenix to the 103-99 win over Seattle.?

For those of you who are fans of NCAA basketball and even more importantly, University of Michigan basketball fans, you probably remember the fateful decision that Chris Webber made some time ago when he called a timeout - when the Wolverines were out of timeouts.? A technical foul was the result, and the Wolverines were eliminated from the NCAA tournament.? Friday’s game between the Seattle SuperSonics and Phoenix Suns proved once again that mistakes such as this can happen at the professional level and more importantly, help your team lose the game.? Ask the Sonics’ Wally Szczerbiak; with 15.1 seconds left in the game, he took the ball out of bounds, found no one open, then called a timeout - and yes, the Sonics were out of timeouts.? That blunder enabled the Suns to escape with a narrow, 103-99 victory.

Neither team did anything special in the first quarter, with the Suns holding a narrow 26-23 lead; Phoenix managed to miss its first seven 3-pointers before Leandro Barbosa drained one to give the Suns a 53-47 edge with 33 seconds clef tin the first half.? Seattle’s Johan Petro?tipped in a missed shot to cut the Suns’ lead to 53-49 at halftime.? Perfect free-throw shooting by the Suns kept them in the game in the first half, going 14-of-14.

The Sonics were within striking distance of the Suns in the third quarter, with the suns holding no more than an 8-point lead; Phoenix’s Raja Bell made a 15-footer, giving the Suns a 78-74 edge going into the fourth quarter.? The?Suns struggled throughout the fourth?period, but seemed to have finally regained control with a 98-90 lead with 2:58 to go in the game; But Seattle scored the next 9 points to go up 99-98 on Chris Wilcox’s basket with 1:04 left.

The Suns’ Boris Diaw missed a drive to the basket, got his own rebound, then Grant Hill’s basket with 28.7 seconds remaining put Phoenix back up again, 100-99.? Seattle did get 2 chances, but Wilcox missed a shot then Petro missed a tip-in; the ball was knocked out of bounds, setting up Szczerbiak’s blunder.? The ill-advised timeout by Szczerbiak turned into a technical foul;?Phoenix’s Steve Nash made the technical free throw, then retained possession by rule.? ?Nash was fouled, then he made a pair of free throws, icing the game for the Suns.

Phoenix was led by Amare Stoudemire with a good game, scoring 33 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot; Hill scored 16 with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a blocked shot.? Barbosa, from off the bench, added 15 while Raja Bell chipped in with 14 with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.? Nash also contributed with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists and a pair of steals.? Seattle’s leading scorer was Chris Wilcox who recorded a solid double-double with 22 points, 15 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot; Nick Collison also added a double-double, scoring 11 with a dozen boards and a blocked shot.? Phoenix (35-15) remains home to host the Washington Wizards on Sunday, while Seattle (13-37) returns home for a long rest until Wednesday when they host the Utah Jazz.

LeBron James recorded a double-double scoring 26 points, and grabbed 11 boards as the Cleveland Cavaliers stopped the Atlanta Hawks Friday night, and won 100-95. Unlike Thursday night when Cleveland lost to Houston this time he had lots of help from his teammates, as the Cavaliers held on in the end.

For some reason there are certain teams who have other team’s “numbers.”?It doesn’t matter if the teams are playing on opposite ends of the extreme, some teams just historically are tough to beat by other teams. In MLB it’s the Kansas City Royals?who have the Cleveland?Indians “number.” No matter how good a season the Tribe is having and how badly K.C. plays Cleveland always has trouble defeating them. The Atlanta Hawks have not been any good since the Reagan Administration (I may be exaggerating, but not by much.)?Yet the Cavaliers have always had a tough time beating them, Friday night was no exception.

Atlanta jumped out to a razor thin lead as they had a 26-25 advantage at the end of the first quarter, Cleveland took the lead as the two teams reached the half, with the Cavaliers leading 59-50. Cleveland still had the upper hand at the end of the third, as they were up by double digits?leading 80-69, but Atlanta was not quite through, yet. The Hawks started the final?quarter on fire offensively and defensively as they went on a 16-4?run to take?the lead at 85-84 as Josh smith slammed home a bucket, and then hit the shot at the line on the penalty.?The lead changed hands a couple of times over the next few possessions, but soon Cleveland was up 94-89, and Atlanta could not rally again.

James shot 11-24?from the floor, 4-4 at the line for 26 points, along with his 11 rebounds, he had 7 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. With Drew Gooden still out with a strained groin, Ira Newble stepped up big scoring a season high 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, Zydrunas Ilgauskas also recorded a double-double, 17 points, 11 boards, 4 blocks, 1 assist. Larry Hughes scored 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and Damon Jones came off the bench?to score 13 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds.

Joe Johnson led the way for Atlanta as he scored 23 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals. Marvin Williams scored 21 points, 5 rebounds, Josh Smith scored 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks, Josh Childress scored 12 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 block. Cleveland is now sitting at 28-21 Atlanta is 21-25.

The usual suspects in the Detroit Pistons uniforms, for once, didn’t have to supply the offensive firepower that they usually have to get the desired result.? Granted, Chauncey Billups scored 17 first-quarter points, but the bench proved crucial, as the Pistons cruised to a 91-82 win over the Portland Trail Blazers Friday night at Palace at Auburn Hills.

Detroit led 27-18 after one quarter, thanks to Billups’ big scoring binge of 17 points; they then proceeded to blow the game wide open with Rasheed Wallace and 4 Pistons’ reserves on the floor.? With Wallace, Rodney Stuckey, Amir Johnson, Jarvis Hayes and Arron Affalo, the Pistons went on a 23-8 run on their way to a 50-36 lead at halftime.? The Pistons at one point led by as much as 27 in the second half.? So in essence, the game wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.

Detroit was led by Billups with 17 points - all of them in the first quarter - with a rebound and 5 assists, while Stuckey scored 13 with 3 rebounds and 4 assists.? Portland’s leading scorer was LaMarcus Aldridge with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal; Jarrett Jack was the only other Blazer in double-digits, scoring 10 with 4 rebounds and 5 assists.? Detroit (36-13) continues their homestand by hosting the Charlotte Bobcats Sunday, while Portland (28-21) makes the short journey to Indianapolis to face the Indiana Pacers on Saturday.
