Rasheed Wallace - Reluctant All-Star

?????????????????????????????????????Detroit Pistons forward/center Rasheed Wallace?

One would think that an NBA player who is being selected for the NBA All-Star game would be tickled pink about the opportunity to play against the world’s best basketball players.? Don’t tell that to Detroit forward Rasheed Wallace; Wallace, who was under the assumption that he wouldn’t be selected for the game, found out otherwise as NBA commissioner David Stern picked Wallace to replace Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, who is recovering from an abdominal ailment.

Instead of a planned family vacation during the All-Star break, Wallace will go to New Orleans instead; Wallace told the Detroit Free Press, regarding the All-Star selection, “This time I’ll go for the kids.? I guess once I get older or out of the game, they can look back on it and check it out.”? In the grand scheme of things, Stern may have had little choice but to pick Wallace for several reasons: he could have very easily have selected?the Celtics’ Ray Allen or even?Orlando Magic small forward Hedo Turkoglu, but because the coaches have already have said that a center wasn’t going to take up space on the bench, having already selected Chris Bosh and Antawn Jamison.

Also factor in that Wallace was third in fan voting for the All-Star game, but now because Shaquille O’Neal is in the Western Conference, that automatically bumped up Wallace, just behind Magic center Dwight?Howard.? Wallace’s last appearance at the All-Star game was in 2006, when the Pistons sent 4 of their starting 5 to the game.?
