The Philadelphia 76ers, unlike their old stomping grounds (Wachovia Spectrum) are enjoying a renaissance of sorts.? Andre Miller had no small part of the team’s resurgence; his 21 points helped keep the Sixers’ playoff hopes alive with a 84-76 victory over the Dallas Mavericks Monday night at Wachovia Center.
The Mavericks, to be fair, were short-handed, missing Jerry Stackhouse (hamstring), Erick Dampier (ankle) and Devin Harris (bruised left ankle) so offensive firepower was in short supply.? Neither team shot especially well (Philadelphia shot 44.4% while Dallas shot a miserable 35.1% from the floor); the Sixers’ Miller?scored the team’s final 9 points of the first half that pulled Philadelphia? from 10 down to within 53-50 at halftime.
Dallas, to illustrate how difficult a time they had scoring, scored only 23 points in the second half – 10 in the fourth quarter; the Mavericks missed 13 consecutive shots spanning the third and fourth quarters.? Add to the misery that the Mavericks’ Josh Howard had to leave during the fourth quarter after he collided woth the Sixers’ Reggie Evans and crashed to the floor; he returned after a trip to the locker room, but a bruised lower back kept Howard out for good at the 7:17 mark of the final period.
Philadelphia was led by Miller with another strong effort, scoring 21 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals; Andre Iguodala?added 14 with 3 rebounds and 4 assists.? Dallas was led by Howard with 17 points with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal; Dirk Nowitski, on 4-0f-15, scored 15 in a losing effort.? Philadelphia, (22-30) on a 4-game winning streak, hope to continue their resurgence by hosting the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday; Dallas (34-17) returns home to host the Portland Trail Blazers – also on Wednesday.
