Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal participated in his first team practice on Monday, and if the results from the practice are any indication, O’Neal is in relatively good shape.? He participated in every drill - shooting and 5-on-5 exercises - all being watched by Suns head athletic trainer Arron Nelson and staff.? O’Neal told Josh Greene of Suns.com, “It was a lot of running and a lot of learning.? This is something very different for me.? I just have to get in-tune with what everybody?s doing.? When you talk about being on a great team, everybody has to be on the same page.? I don’t want to be the one who slows us up half a millisecond.”
Suns coach Mike D’Antoni said that the team will need to make an adjustment, mindful of O’Neal’s skill set, in order to retain team chemistry.? D’Antoni added that it shouldn’t be a problem.? O’Neal is currently listed as “day-to-day”, but that could possibly change as O’Neal will sit down and consult with D’Antoni and Nelson to evaluate how he feels physically, leaving open the possibility that O’Neal could play just before the All-Star break.

Stephen Jackson, at any given time during a game, can be capable of an offensive explosion.? Monday night against the Washington Wizards, he certainly exploded - to the tune of 41 points; but what is more impressive about his effort was the fact that he played the game with a sprained left ankle.? His scoring sparked a late rally as the Golden State Warriors edged the Wizards 120-117 at a sold-out Oracle Arena.
Despite being shorthanded - Caron Butler, Antonio Daniels and Gilbert Arenas out with assorted injuries - Washington played a lights-out first half as they took into halftime a 17-point lead; oddly enough, 70 of their 72 first-half points were scored by just four of their players.? Fast forwarding to the fourth quarter, Golden?State closed the gap to 113-111 on Jackson’s 2 free throws with 2:03 remaining in the game; Andris Biedrins rebounded?Jackson’s missed free throw, which set up Jackson’s go-ahead 3-pointer.
That trey with 55.6 seconds left gave Golden State their first lead since the opening minute of the game, while the Wizards were held scoreless for 2:50, allowing the Warriors to hold on for the victory.? Golden State’s leading scorer was Jackson with a season-high 41 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a pair of steals; Monta Ellis scored 22 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.? Al Harrington added 21 with 8 rebounds and 3 assists, while Baron Davis had a solid game, chipping in with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals.
Washington was led by Roger Mason with 32 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal; Antawn Jamison scored 25 with 10 rebounds, an assist, 6 steals?and a blocked shot.? Brendan Haywood had another solid game, adding 20 points with 10 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot, while DeShawn Stevenson contributed 18 with 3 rebounds and 7 assists.? Golden State’s (31-20) homestand continues as they host the Phoenix Suns Wednesday, while Washington (24-27) travels south to Los Angeles to face the Clippers at Staples Center - also on Wednesday.

Yao Keys Rockets Comeback Burn Blazers 95-83
Filed Under Main | Leave a Comment
The Houston Rockets are not a team with a lot of?”sizzle.” Phoenix, Dallas, the Lakers, Boston, maybe even Denver, those teams have “sizzle.” They are?not a team that is a pleasant surprise, like New Orleans, Portland, or Orlando. Their starting point guard may have been “Skip-To-My-Lou” on the playgrounds, but in the Association, Rafer Alston is at best an average point guard. But what do they have is arguably one of the three best “Pure” centers in the NBA, and a pretty darn good shooting guard.? The center Yao Ming led all five Houston starters in double figures with 25 points, as the Rockets flew past the Portland Trail Blazers 95-83 Monday.
The Blazers took the early lead as they had a 24-18 edge at the end of the first quarter. Houston went into the half however with a razor thin advantage leading 44-43. The Rockets started to surge ahead in the third quarter, as they never trailed in the period, and went into the final 12 minutes of play up? 69-62. Houston scored the first 8 points of the fourth quarter, as they went ahead 77-62. Portland could never mount a challenge after that, and Houston went on for the easy win.
Yao shot 7-11 from the floor, 11-13 from the line for his game high 25 points, he also?had 7 rebounds in the win. Alston had a good night scoring 17? points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, Tracy McGrady scored 12 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block. Luis Scola scored 11 points, grabbed 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, Shane Battier scored 11 as well,? 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block.
LaMarcus Aldridge paced Portland as he shot 10-26 from the floor, 2-2 from the line for 22 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 assists, 1 steal. Brandon Roy scored 15 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, ?Martell Webster scored 11 points, grabbed 6 blocks in the loss. Houston has won seven straight games, and now have a record of 31-20, Portland is 28-23.
