Rasheed Wallace scored most of his points early, and Chauncey Billups scored most of his points late as the Detroit Pistons withstood a third quarter surge by the Atlanta Hawks and defeated them Tuesday night 94-90. The Pistons actually trailed?the Hawks after three quarters,?but Billups fourth quarter scoring allowed them to leave Atlanta with a victory.

Detroit took an early 25-18 lead as Wallace went on a scoring jag in the first quarter, scoring 15 straight points. Both teams heated up offensively in the second quarter as the Pistons had a 55-48 advantage when the game reached the half. The Hawks came out smoking in? the third quarter, as they wiped out a 60-49 Pistons lead to take upper hand at 63-62, as rookie Al Horford put it up and in for two with 6:03 remaining in the period. The lead switched hands for the next few minutes, but Atlanta was on top at the end of the quarter 76-74. The Hawks led for most of the final period until Billups hit a?trey to tie the contest at 84-84 with 4:22 remaining in the game. Josh Childress made a layup to put Atlanta up by 2 but Billups hit another trey to give Detroit their first lead of the quarter at 87-86 with 3:28 left. A Billups layup, followed by Antonio McDyess hitting 1-2 at the line put Detroit up 90-86, and the Hawks could not recover.

Rasheed led the Pistons with 21 points, a game high 5 steals, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks. Billups had 16 points, a game high 8 assists, 4 rebounds, Richard Hamilton scored 12 points, 5 boards, 1 steal. Rookie Rodney Stuckey who spent most of the first part of the season on the injured list after an impressive preseason, also scored 12 points, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 rebound.

Josh Smith led all scorers with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks 2 assists. Horford who looks less like a rookie with each passing game, recorded a double-double 12 points, a game high 16 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, Josh Childress also scored 12 points, 2 steals, 1 rebound. Joe Johnson scored 11 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists. Detroit improves to 38-13, Atlanta is now 21-27.
