Filed Under Main | Leave a Comment
Tuesday Slam Dunk Central?reported a story that we had acquired from New York’s “NewsDay” which we entitled Zeke Says No Trades Likely Before NBA Deadline. One of the things that?I truly admire about sports reporters from NYC, they don’t take anything at face value. Now both “NewsDay” and the “New York Daily News” are reporting that the Knicks may be shopping players after all. “NewsDay”, is reporting that injured point guard Stephon Marbury is being shopped heavily by?New?York.? The controversial point guard is out for the season after ankle surgery.
The “New?York Daily News” has reported that Knicks General Manager Isiah Thomas is desperately trying to trade Eddy Curry. Curry has seen? his stock with Thomas drop faster than a meteor. Curry says he realizes it is a business and trades happen in the Association

Filed Under Main | Leave a Comment
Paul Pierce scored 24 points, Ray Allen celebrated being named to the NBA All-Star team with an additional 21 points, and the Boston Celtics defeated the New York Knicks 111-103 Wednesday night. It was Boston’s fifth straight win, even more impressive was the fact that they have done it without the services of Kevin Garnett, who has missed nine straight games with a strained abdominal muscle.?Garnett will also miss playing in this Sunday’s All-Star game with teammates Allen, and Pierce.
Allen got the news that he made the Eastern Conference?All-Star team at half time of?Wednesday night’s game. He will replace Washington Wizard forward Caron Butler who is injured. Allen said that he was very honored and pleased to be?name for the game. Both Pierce and Allen will play for Celtics coach Doc?Rivers who will be coaching the Eastern squad. Allen had plans to play golf in the Bahamas this weekend, he said he will gladly give up that game for the game in New Orleans.
New York led off the game playing pretty well as they led Boston 24-21 at the end of the first quarter. Boston came back with a vengeance in the second quarter leading at the half 53-40. The Green Team got the lead as high as 27? points, when Pierce hit a jumper putting the Celtics ahead 75-48 with 5:47 left in the quarter. But the Knicks closed out the quarter on a 24-10 run, and putting themselves back in the game as Boston led 85-72 at the end of three. But New York had dug themselves too deep a hole to climb out of as they never got closer than 7 points in the fourth quarter.
Pierce scored 24 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block. Allen scored 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, Leon Powe who is making a stronger case with each game to remain the Celtics starting center for the rest of the season, had 18 points, 8 boards, 1 block, 1 assist. Rajon Rondo also scored 18 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks, Tony Allen came off the bench and scored 14 points, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 rebound.
Jamal Crawford led all?players as he scored a game high 26 points, 7 assists, 6 steals, 2 rebounds, in the loss. Zach Randolph recorded a double-double, 20 points, 13 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, David Lee came off the bench and scored 18 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal. Nate Robinson also had a nice?game off the bench, 5 assists, 1 rebound, 1 steal, Fred Jones scored 10 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal. Boston has guaranteed themselves no worse than a .500 season, as they are now 41-9, New York is 15-37.

The Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors?Wednesday night had the kind of basketball game that one would expect from two of the top teams in the Western Conference - run- and-gun at its finest.? Monta Ellis and Baron Davis sparked?a rally late in the fourth quarter, enabling the Warriors to emerge victorious 120-118 at a sold-out Oracle Arena.
Both teams shot very well (Phoenix shot 51.7% while Golden State shot 54.2%); Golden State would go into halftime with a slim 59-55 lead.? The second half was more of the same track meet run-and-gun offense by both squads; fast forwarding to the fourth quarter, Golden State’s Ellis scored 3 straight baskets midway through the quarter, giving the Warriors a 105-104 lead.? Consecutive 3-pointers by Steven Jackson and Kelenna Azubuike gave Golden State a 113-109 lead with 3:19 remaining in the game, but Phoenix would respond with baskets by Steve Nash and Grant Hill to knot it up.
But Davis would take over; his 2 baskets with 1:14 left in the game would ice the game for Golden State as Phoenix could never catch up.? Golden State’s leading scorer was Ellis with 37 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists - a monster game for Ellis; Davis scored 27 with 3 rebounds, 13 assists and a steal, while Jackson added 19 with 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.? Phoenix?had 4 players with 20 or more points, led by Amare Stoudemire with 29 points and 13 rebounds, while?Hill scored 26 with 15 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal; Leandro Barbosa from off the bench added 24 with 5 rebounds and an assist.? Nash chipped in with 20 along with 4 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 steals but 7 turnovers.? Golden State (32-20) doesn’t play again until next Tuesday when they travel to Salt Lake?City to face the Utah Jazz, while Phoenix (36-16), after the All-Star break, hosts the Dallas Mavericks next Thursday.??

It will be forever known in Dallas as “The One That Got Away.” The Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets had everything in place to send Jason Kidd to Dallas in exchange for a combination of players, draft picks, and money. There was only thing wrong. The Mavericks forgot that reserve forward Devean George had a no-trade clause in his contract, which he exercised killing the deal. George did not help his popularity in Dallas Wednesday night, as he started in place of the injured Josh Howard (out with a bruised back) and went 0-11 from the floor and scored nary a point. But a huge effort from Dirk Nowitzki led the Dallas Mavericks to a 96-76 thumping of the Portland Trail Blazers 96-76. And the beat goes on.
George missed the pre-game shoot around, as he was discussing with his agent about invoking his no-trade clause. In fact he did not know he was starting until getting to the Arena, just before game time. George acknowledged he had a terrible night on the court, as well as being the perceived villain right now in “Big D.” He said that he would take the responsibility of being in his words “the bad guy” with a big smile on his face according to reporters.
Dallas except for George, did not look like they were effected by the trade falling through? as they led from the opening tip, and jumped to a?28-15 lead after the first quarter. The?Mavericks saw their lead shrink to only 11 points, as they led Portland 54-43 as the two teams reached the half. Dallas got the lead back up to 14 points, at the end of the third leading 73-59. Portland was never able to get any closer than 11 points,?in the final period as the Mavericks just ran away and hid.
Nowitzki recorded a double-double, scoring a game high 37 points, grabbing a game high 12 boards, 2 blocks, 2 assists, 1 steal. Jason Terry scored 24 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, point guard Jose Juan Barea came off the bench and scored 11 points, 4 assists, 4 rebound. Center Erick Dampier also registered a double-double, as he scored 10 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block. ?
Brandon Roy scored a team high 25 points for the Blazers, he also had 6 assists, 6 rebounds in the loss. Steve Blake scored 13 points, 5 boards, 1 assist, and Travis Outlaw scored 13 points as well for the Trail Blazers, and 1 rebound as he came off the bench. Dallas will pick up the pieces, and move on, their record is now 35-17, Portland is 28-24.

The Sacramento Kings had Wednesday’s game against the Houston Rockets in?good hands late; unfortunately for them, the Rockets’ Steve Novak drained a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the game, pushing the Rockets past the Kings 89-87 at Toyota Center.
Houston led after one quarter 35-20, the most points they have scored in one quarter this season; but they wouldn’t score? for nearly 2 1/2 minutes in the second quarter yet maintained a safe lead because Sacramento managed only 4 points during that span themselves.? The Rockets’ scoring drought ended when Sacramento’s Brad Miller was whistled for a technical foul for complaining to the refs; Yao Ming would make 1 of 2 free throws that pushed the Rockets’ lead to 50-33 with less than 4 minutes left in the first half.? Houston would go into their locker room with a 52-39 lead.
Sacramento wouldn’t get any closer in the third quarter as the Rockets’ Shane Battier drained a 3? to stretch Houston’s lead to 59-49; turnovers and several missed shots by the Kings after that and 2 consecutive treys by Houston’s Rafer Alston gave Houston a 75-56 edge late in the quarter.? The Kings trailed by 18 at the end of the third, but started a 15-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Miller to get to within 80-76 midway through the fourth quarter.
Ming scored 5 for Houston over the next 2 minutes, but the Kings’ Ron Artest?cut the Rockets’ lead to 86-83 with 2 minutes remaining; Artest missed 2 free throws before hitting a jumper to get to within a point with 58 seconds left.? Artest’s jumper after a steal by Justin Williams?gave the Kings an 87-86 lead with 24 ticks on the clock - their first lead since very early in the first quarter (8-7).? But much to the disappointment of the Kings, the aforementioned Novak drained a trey with 2 seconds to go, sealing the win for Houston; the 3-pointer were the only points scored by Novak.
Houston was led by Ming with 25 points, 14 rebounds, an assist and 3 blocked shots; Alston scored 23 - including 3 treys - with a rebound, 7 assists and a steal, while Battier?added 15, including?three 3-pointers, with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.? Sacramento’s leading scorer was?Artest with 30 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals; Mike Bibby scored 14 with a rebound, 4 assists and a steal.? Williams, while scoring only 4 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, had 5 steals?and blocked a shot.? Houston (32-20) doesn’t play again until next Tuesday, when they travel to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers; Sacramento (23-28), after the All-Star break, flies to Portland to take on the Portland Trail Blazers - also next Tuesday.??

I think it is safe to say that the Detroit Pistons are on a roll going into the All-Star break - which isn’t good for the rest of the Eastern Conference.? Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers proved why the Pistons are the class of the conference as they held the Pacers to only 31.6% shooting from the floor in coasting to an easy 96-80 win at Palace of Auburn Hills.
That’s not to say that the Pistons shot well themselves, as they only shot 42.5%.? It was just the matter of Indiana’s inability to shoot, period.? The Pistons took the lead for good midway through the first quarter as they led 55-42 at halftime and would build the lead up to 73-50 late in the third quarter.? The Pacers could never put together a run of any substance.? Detroit?was led by three players - Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince with 14 points each; Billups?grabbed a rebound, dished out 6 assists and had 3 steals.? Hamilton, along with his 4 treys, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assists, while Prince grabbed 3 rebounds.? Jason Maxiell added 11 with 11 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.
Indiana’s leading scorer was Ike Diogu from off the bench with 14 points and 3 rebounds, while Mike Dunleavy scored 11 with 2 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal; Andre Owens added 10 with 6 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals.? Detroit (39-13), after the All-Star break, will put their 10-win streak on the line as they host the Orlando Magic next Tuesday; Indiana returns home to host the Cleveland Cavaliers next Wednesday.?
