The Orlando Sentinel Thursday reported that Orlando Magic General Manager Otis Smith had no problem with coach Stan Van Gundy’s public undressing of Magic center Dwight Howard Monday night. Van Gundy said Monday after the Magic lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers that his All-Star center was unfocused on the court, and was too worried about scoring rather than playing defense. Tuesday he told reporters, that he had repeatedly given Howard the same speech privately many times, but he never saw any results from their talks. He thought by airing it publicly, it would get better results. Smith says he stands 100% behind his head coach in the matter, and thinks he handled it just fine. Smith told the paper that Van Gundy and Howard are two grown men, and can handle rocky waters. He also said that the numbers back Van Gundy up, when Howard has had big games rebounding the Magic win. Smith said that the coach could have easily called out four or five other players, but the G.M. did not name anyone. Smith said to the paper “I’m a Stan fan. I don’t think Stan did anything wrong.”
