Nets And Mavs Try To Salvage “The Deal That Would Not Die”
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
It sounds like it should be the title of a 1950’s “B” Grade Horror flick “The Deal That Would Not Die!” However according to “The Star-Ledger” out of New Jersey Friday,?the Dallas Mavericks are still trying to resuscitate the trade that was almost consummated between the two teams earlier this week. The deal would have sent point guard Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, Devean George, DeSagna Diop, Maurice Ager, and cash considerations to the Nets. The deal would also have given New Jersey the Dallas draft picks, in 2008, and 2010. In return Dallas would have gotten J-Kidd, and Malik Allen from the Nets.?However Devean George who has a no-trade clause in his contract, stopped the deal from being completed when he invoked his clause.
The report says that both teams are trying to see if they can come up with a different mix of players to make the deal happen. Dallas has also held talks with George’s agent Mark Bartelstein to see if there is any way to get the player to change his stance. However even if that happens, there may be another kink to work out. ESPN writer Chris Broussard reported Friday that the Association is none too happy with the statements from Jerry Stackhouse when the trade appeared to be happening. Stackhouse believed that if the deal went through, that he would be waived by the Nets. He told reporters, that he would be back in Dallas playing in 30 days after the trade is completed. A NBA rule adopted in the 2005 collective bargaining agreement, makes it mandatory that if one team trades a player to second team, and the second team waives him, the player can not go back to the first team until 30 days have passed. Broussard is reporting that Association sources told him that the League has already told Dallas that Stackhouse can be included in the trade to New Jersey, but will not be allowed to re-sign with Dallas. As Alice said things keep getting curiouser and curiouser!
