Stern To Seattle: See Ya!
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
The Associated Press quoted NBA Commissioner David Stern as saying that the relationship between the city of Seattle and the Association will be coming to an end, the only question is when. Stern said that the SuperSonics abandoning Seattle was “inevitable” the only question remaining is will the team move to Oklahoma City at the end of this season, or in 2010.
Stern told reporters that “there is no miracle here” when talking about Seattle staying in the great Northwest region. Sonics owner Clay Bennett is from Oklahoma?City, and made no bones about the fact that he would move the franchise if city leader did not help the team get a new arena. When the city failed to come through Bennett looked into seeing if he could move the team at the end of the current season, the team’s lease with Key Arena expires in 2010. That would be the latest date that the team would relocate. The Sonics are the only team in Seattle to win a league championship, neither the Mariners or the Seahawks have come close.
