The “Rocky Mountain News” reported Monday that Denver Nuggets veteran guard Chucky Atkins was given clearance by doctors to begin running. Atkins had surgery for a Sports Hernia on January 11, and this is the first step in his return to playing on the hardwood. Atkins was originally told that he would take 10 weeks before he would be in playing shape, by the doctors after the surgery was performed. Atkins told reporters, that instead of watching the calendar he is listening to his body, that he will know when he is ready to return to action. Atkins who is 33 years old is in his ninth season in the Association, his first in Denver. He had previously played, in Orlando, Detroit, Boston, in L.A. with the Lakers, Washington, and Memphis.

The NBA announced Monday that Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James was named the NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played between Tuesday February 19, through Sunday February 24. The “Palm Beach Post” Monday reported that Miami Heat rookie guard Daequan Cook could be heading for a stint in the NBDL (No, the Heat only play like they belong in the NBDL, they are still a NBA franchise.) Cook who played one season for Ohio State before jumping to the Association, has had trouble making the transition. In the Heat’s last 23 games Cook has shot better than 50% from the floor a total of three times. He is shooting just 32.6% during that time frame. Heat coach Pat Riley told the paper he is thinking of sending Cook to the “D” league to boost his confidence back up as much as for any other reason. Cook said that he would take the demotion as a learning experience, and he realizes he has a lot of work to get to the level that he wants to be at.

The “Chicago Sun-Times” Monday reported that Chicago Bulls interim head coach Jim Boylan has informed his two newest players Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden that the team does not allow it’s players to wear head bands. The team has allowed one exception, to one of the players that was traded for the former Cleveland Cavaliers duo, Ben Wallace. Boylan informed both vets there would be no exceptions made in their cases. As far as Boylan’s status as interim coach Bulls General Manager John Paxson told reporters that he thought the coach was doing a very good job under very tough circumstances. Boylan a former assistant coach with the team, took over as interim head coach after Scott Skiles was fired on Christmas Eve. Boylan has heard rumors of other people coveting his position including former Pistons coach Larry Brown. Boylan says he tries not to pay attention to the rumors or allow them to get under his skin.
