If you are a fan of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and hoped this year of torture you are going through in the “Post Big Ticket” era would end with management infusing all this talent back onto the team via free agency, sorry. The “Minneapolis Star Tribune” Monday reported that T-Wolves owner Glen Taylor told the paper that because of millions being spent on contracts of former players that the team bought out like Juwan Howard and Troy Hudson, the cupboard is bare. There is no money to be spent on free agents, the only way the franchise will improve is through the draft and the current players getting better. Perhaps that is why the team is playing hardball with veteran Antoine Walker who has not been activated for the last two game the team has played even though he is in perfect health. Coach Randy Wittman says he is evaluating other players, and that could be true, but perhaps they are hoping Walker will cave before March 1, which is the last date he could sign with a contending team. Walker has told reporters that he would not negotiate a buyout where he received less than what his contract calls for. But if it means giving up some money or sitting in limbo, he may just bargain.
