Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said he earlier this week he was hoping for a shot of “Tough Juice” (Wizards forward Caron Butler’s nickname)Thursday night.? He certainly got it as his returning All-Star celebrated his return and his 28th birthday leading the Wizards to a 101-99 defeat of the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night 101-99. The win was the Wizards second in a row, and brought them back to the .500 mark, it also leaves them just two games behind the Toronto Raptors for the race for the fifth seed in the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs.
This was a tightly played contest all game as the lead changed hands?12 times during the night, and the two teams were tied 24 times. Washington took the lead at the?end of the first quarter, 27-24. Cleveland after trailing for?most of the second quarter tied the Wizards at 42-42 as Ben Wallace made a hook shot with 3:46 left in the period. LeBron James put the?Cavaliers ahead 44-42 as he hit two at the line, Sasha Pavlovic then hit back to back treys to put Cleveland ahead 50-44 with 1:54 left in the quarter. The Cavaliers would take an eight point lead into the half being up?54-46. Washington opened the third quarter on a 17-6 run, to grab the?lead back at 63-60 as Antawn Jamison hit one from the stripe with 7:43 remaining. Although the two opponents were tied at 70-70 with 3:32 left in the quarter, Washington would hold the lead the rest of the period, ending it ahead 80-79. It all came down to the last 8 seconds in the fourth, as Cleveland trailed by 4 got to within one as Damon Jones hit a?24 foot trey to make it a 100-99 game. Cleveland fouled Antonio Daniels who went 1-2 at the line and it was Washington 101 Cleveland 99. LBJ had a chance at the buzzer to win but missed with his three point shot attempt.
Butler led 7 Wizards?players in double?figures?with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, ?Antawn Jamison had a double-double, as he scored 17 points, grabbed 10 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal. Darius Songaila scored 15 points, 1 steal, 1 assist, 1 rebound, Brendan Haywood scored 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists. DeShawn Stevenson scored 13 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, Antonio Daniels scored 10 points, 7 assists, 1 rebound. Nick Young scored 10 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal.
LBJ led Cleveland with 25 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, in the loss. Sasha Pavlovic was on fire offensively hitting 5 treys and scoring 24 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 1 assist, Delonte West had a nice game as he scored 10 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals. Washington is now 32-32 Cleveland after losing back to back games is now 37-29.
