Williams’ 14 Fourth Quarter Points Help Pacers Slip Past Bobcats
Posted by Stephen Rhodes under Main
The Indiana Pacers were without the services of Danny Granger in Wednesday’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats; so what was their solution? They inserted reserve Shawne Williams into the lineup for the bulk of the fourth quarter, that’s what. The move worked wonders as Williams scored 14 points in the final period, helping the Pacers slip past the Bobcats 102-95 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Charlotte led at halftime 53-46, but Indiana started the second half hot and managed to tie the game at 64 on a jumper in the lane by Kareem Rush; Ronald Murray scored 14 points in the third quarter, helping the Pacers take a 75-68 lead into the fourth quarter. A 3-pointer by Williams made it 78-68 Indiana, then he dunked over Charlotte’s Jared Dudley.
The Bobcats had possession of the ball, trailing 98-95 with 24 ticks left on the clock; the Bobcats’ Raymond Felton drove to the basket, only to have the shot blocked by Indiana’s Jeff Foster. The Pacers’ Mike Dunleavy was fouled, and he made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left, giving Indiana a 100-95 lead; Charlotte’s Jason Richardson missed a 3-point attempt, and Indiana’s Williams made 2 free throws, icing the game.
Indiana’s leading scorer was Murray with 22 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a blocked shot, while Troy Murphy scored a quiet 18 - including 3 treys - with 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots. Williams, from off the bench, added 16 with 2 rebounds and an assist. Charlotte was led by Richardson with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and was 2 assists shy of a triple-double with 8; he also had 3 steals. From off the bench, Matt Carroll scored 18 - including 3 treys - with 3 rebounds and a blocked shot, while Gerald Wallace added 17 with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Indiana (27-41) now will travel to Minneapolis to face the Timberwolves Friday, while Charlotte (24-44) flies to Miami to take on the Heat this Saturday.
