Fans at the Pepsi Center in Denver on Thursday got to see an entertaining well fought first half of basketball between #4 seed the Washington State Cougars, and the # 13 seed Winthrop Eagles. After battling each other toe to to toe they went to their respective locker rooms at the half deadlocked at 29-29. Apparently the Cougars made some adjustments during their locker room session, and the Eagles did not respond well to it. Washington State just turned the game into a rout in the second half as they outscored Winthrop 42-11 and ended up with a lopsided 71-40 win in their first round game of the NCAA East Regionals. Cougars center Aaron Baynes went a perfect 9-9 from the field for the game ending up with a game high 19 points, and 8 boards. Winthrop was led by forward Taj McCullough who scored 17 points, 8 boards, 2 assists. Washington State will take on the winners of the game between Notre Dame and George Mason in the second round.

Purdue’s leading scorer was Keaton Grant with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, while E-Twaun Moore scored 16 with 8 rebounds and 4 assists.? Baylor was led by Curtis Jerrells with 27 points, 2 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals, while LaceDarius Dunn added 15 with 3 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals.? Pittsburgh Panthers guard Levance Fields scored a game high 23 points, and added 7 assists, and 4 rebounds, as Pitt defeated Oral Roberts Thursday in NCAA First Round action 82-63. The Panthers opened up a 23 point lead over the Golden Eagles at the end of the first half by a margin of 47-24. Oral Roberts did not have a prayer in the second half. The Golden Eagles were led by guard Robert Jarvis who came off the bench to score 16 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, in the loss. Pittsburgh will take on Michigan State in round two.

The UNLV Rebels Thursday defeated Kent State Thursday in NCAA first round action 71-58. The Rebels pushed to a 31-10 lead at the half Qwest Center and even though the Flashes outscored them by 8 points, in the second half they were never really threatened. UNLV shot 50.9% (29-57) from the floor for the game. Joe Darger was the game’s high score as he led UNLV with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist. Kent State was led by Mike Scott who recorded a double-double in the loss 14 points, 10 boards, 1 assist. The Rebels take on #1 seed Kansas in round two.
