The “Houston Chronicle” reported Friday that Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander wants Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo back with the team next year. Alexander says that Mutombo still has plenty left in the tank, and his philosophy as owner is to have the 15 best players on the floor. Mutombo who told reporters earlier this week, that he was too busy enjoying this year and would not commit one way or the other for next season, refused to take the bait when questioned by the media about Alexander’s statement. He was approached by media members at function in which former President George H.W. Bush spoke. The “Ancient Warrior” said “There’s not many times people can get an occasion to have a former president to be the guest speaker for a function. I think I was lucky enough to have that relationship and to have Les Alexander host this dinner and to make the gift to the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation.”

The “Commercial-Appeal” Friday published an interview with Memphis Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace, in which he totally denies a story that on Thursday was published by the New York “Daily News.” The Daily News reported that the Memphis Grizzlies would release rookie head coach Marc Iavaroni at the end of the season, and would hire NBA coaching legend Larry Brown to be the team’s new bench boss. Wallace said the reports had no basis of fact, and that the team was not looking to replace Iavaroni. Wallace told reporters Thursday We support Marc Iavaroni and the job he’s done so far. It’s been a tough season. But Marc and the staff have done an excellent job keeping this team together. There’s been improvement in young players. Our effort is there every night. It’s been an upbeat, relatively together team for a squad that’s been in a tough situation as far as winning ball games.” As for the rumors that Brown would be head coach next year? Wallace responded “I categorically deny that. There’s no heir apparent.”

Atlanta Hawks point guard Mike Bibby

One thing seems for certain - if Atlanta Hawks point guard Mike Bibby goes down for any appreciable amount of time because of injury, the team will suffer accordingly.? Fortunately for the team, Bibby’s current injury, a sprained left thumb, will not stop Bibby from playing in the short-term, according to Sekou Smith of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.? Better yet, let Bibby say it in his own words: “Unless there’s something torn or broken, I’m playing.”? So expect Bibby to suit up when the Hawks play the Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Incidentally, this is the same thumb that was previously injured this season when Bibby missed 36 games - back then, it was a torn thumb ligament.? As previously mentioned, the Hawks can’t afford to have Bibby out of the lineup; since his trade from the Sacramento Kings, he has averaged 13.4 PPG, 6.4 APG and 2.7 RPG.? Not to mention that the Hawks are battling for the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, so Bibby’s presence and participation is important.? And this is not a knock on the reserves, but the Hawks aren’t the same team on the floor with Acie Law.
