I think that realistically, the Denver Nuggets cannot expect guard Allen Iverson or forward Carmelo Anthony to be their primary source of offense night-in, night-out; fortunately for them, they had a “Plan C” in forward Kenyon Martin.? In Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, Martin and Anthony combined for 55 points as Denver edged into 8th place in the Western Conference playoff hunt, beating Golden State 119-112 at Pepsi Center.
Fast-forwarding to the third quarter, Golden State overcame a double-digit deficit and took an 86-83 lead on Kelenna Azubuike’s basket late in the period; the Warriors seemed to be in control, but they missed lots of questionable shots and wouldn’t score again for 6 minutes.? Golden State, however, did pull to within 109-106 on a breakaway dunk by Monta Ellis with 3:13 left in the game; however, Denver’s Martin would ice the game with a basket at the 1:11 mark.
Denver’s high scorer was the aforementioned Martin with 30 points, 11 rebounds, an assist and 2 blocks while Anthony scored 25 with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals; reserve J.R. Smith added 20 with 5 rebounds and 7 assists while Iverson had a sub-par night, chipping in with 14 on 4-of-20 shooting along with 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals.? While Marcus Camby scored only 2 points, he grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out 6 assists, had 3 steals and blocked 5 shots.
Golden State was led by Baron Davis with 4 treys, 28 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals while Stephen Jackson scored 25 with four 3-pointers, 5 rebounds and 4 assists; Ellis added 22 with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals while Andris Biedrins chipped in with 17 with 17 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks.? Denver (45-28) hopes?to maintain their #8 spot in the Western Conference playoff race as they fly to Phoenix to face the Suns Monday while Golden State (44-28) travels to Dallas to take on the Mavericks Sunday.
