Vincent Says He Deserves Another Year

Charlotte Bobcats head coach Sam Vincent showed some moxie while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Vincent who is in his rookie year as a head coach in the NBA, signed a two year contract last summer to take over from former coach Bernie Bickerstaff who is now in the Bobcats front office. Vincent told reporters, that in his mind he truly believes a second year even though Charlotte is almost assuredly lottery bound with a record of 28-46. But Vincent candidly told reporters Wednesday, any higher expectations for the current season were basically pipe dreams. Vincent?exclaimed “Give me a break! Was I really supposed to come in in the first year and have 50 wins? Maybe if I was coaching the Celtics team this year. But I just think that some things have to be kept in perspective. We haven’t talked about whether or not I’ll come back next year. That hasn’t been discussed and hasn’t been said. From what I understand, it’s a two-year contract and I’ll be expected to fulfill that obligation. That’s what I plan on doing!”
Charlotte’s majority owner Robert Johnson said he believes that Vincent deserves another year also, but that the decision would be left to minority owner Michael Jordan. Jordan who hired his former Bulls teammate Vincent last?Summer, said he was not displeased?with the rookie coach’s performance. But he has not decided what Vincent’s fate will be. This observer would be quite shocked if Vincent is not retained, for the first time in the team’s history they looked like a legitimate NBA team this season. Part of the credit goes to newly acquired?veteran Jason Richardson, but a lot goes to Vincent as well. The Bobcats take on the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday night.

As we reported earlier at Slam Dunk Central?the New York Knicks have a new Team President former Indiana Pacers Team President Donnie Walsh.? Walsh who just ended a 24 year relationship with the Pacers was introduced Wednesday afternoon at a nationally televised press conference.? Walsh stressed that he was not going to make any rash decisions.? He said that he does not come into his new position with any pre-conceived notions on any aspect of the Knicks
Walsh told reporters that he has in no way made up his mind in retaining or firing former Knicks President, and still current head coach Isiah Thomas.?The two worked together with the the Pacers, as Thomas was head coach there before the team hired Larry Bird as Head of Basketball Operations. Bird fired Thomas and hired his former assistant Rick Carlisle as head coach. Walsh said he would sit down and talk with Zeke before coming to any decisions.
Walsh also stressed the fact that the team would be under the salary cap in three years. He said his biggest problem would probably be keeping patient. Not to over react and sign anyone to long term contracts that could prove to be a burden down the road. He realizes he said that this was going to be a long term project, but his ultimate goal is to return the New York Knicks to being an “elite team.”
