If the Atlanta Hawks are not exciting the locals right now, than they never will. In a game that brought back memories of the days of Mike Fratello, Dominique Wilkins, and Doc Rivers the Hawks won a shootout against the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night that went to overtime by the score of 127-120. Atlanta? won by using the trey as a dagger shooting 54.5% (12-22) from outside the arc.
If you are a regular reader of mine then you are aware that I am extremely pleased that the NBA in the last couple of seasons has crawled out of the Dark Ages of basketball. After watching fast break high powered offensive teams winning consistently until the late 1980’s, the Association turned into a “thug and mug league.”? Patterned after the success of the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” teams, and to a lesser extent Pat Riley’s teams with New York, slow down grinding defensive teams became the new vogue. But especially this season, we are starting to see more and more games with final scores in triple figures. As the Association used to say back in the day “That’s FAN-tastic!”
The first half of this game was kind?of like? I-10 in Los?Angeles, bumper to bumper traffic at 90 MPH. The Hawks had the advantage at the end of the first quarter as they held a 31-27 lead. Toronto would grab the lead at the half?as it was 59-55 when the two teams went to their respective locker rooms. The third quarter looked like the Raptors were on the verge of turning this game into a blowout, as were ahead 91-80 heading into the fourth. But the Hawks took flight in the fourth tying the game at the buzzer as Mike Bibby connected on a 23 foot trey, at the end of regulation it was deadlocked at 107-107. The trey was their key to the victory in the extra period as?Josh Smith hit 2 clutch ones, and Bibby hit another? to give Atlanta? the win.
Joe Johnson recorded a double-double as? the NBA Eastern Conference Player for March scored a game high 28 points, 11 assists, 7 rebounds, 1 steal. Last month I asked the question is there anybody out there who does not consider Atlanta acquiring Mike Bibby from Sacramento an abject failure? If he has more games like this I will have to eat my words! Bibby in his best game by far in a Hawks uniform, recorded a double-double, scoring 26 points, dishing off 12 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, Josh Smith scored 24 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks. Marvin Williams scored 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, ?yet another double-double?for rookie? Al Horford who scored 14 points, and grabbed 12 boards. Josh Childress scored 11 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block.
Chris Bosh was the high scorer for Toronto as?he had 24 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block. ?T.J. Ford registered a double-double, as he scored 23 points, 13 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, Rasho Nesterovic scored 21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks.? Andrea Bargnani scored 17 points, 3 rebounds, Anthony Parker scored 12 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. Atlanta is now 35-40, Toronto is 38-37.?
